Title: Shakira - She Wolf

In Denial - June 19, 2009 04:57 PM (GMT)
Shakira is back with her new single 'She Wolf' which premiers at the end of this month!

Unfortunately and quite coincidentally a number of people have been reporting attacks from she-wolfs.

Two videos of the she-wolf caught in the action can be seen here:

Popjustice's review of the single:

A lady from Shakira 's record label came to play us the big comeback single 'She Wolf' earlier this morning, then she left the building with the CD.

Fortunately we had secretly wired up our office with hundreds of high quality microphones, allowing us to bootleg the song - an MP3 of which we will put online later.

In the meantime, make do with the news that...

» It doesn't sound like anything Shakira has done before - it's a bit dancey and a bit electronic with a quite organic disco feel - but even as an instrumental there would still be a feeling that this is very much a Shakira-sounding track. We know a lot of people (including Shakira) are very protective of Shakira's sonic identity and we think they'll be satisfied that she's gone in a slightly new direction wiht this while keeping herself right in the centre of the mix. From this jumping off point the rest of the album could go in any direction - it's quite exciting.

» To underscore the 'a bit dancey' claim above: everyone report to the dancefloor, it's 125 beats per minute.

» The chorus goes "there's a she wolf in the closet, open up and set it free (howling noise), there's a she wolf in the closet, let it out so it can breathe". To be absolutely clear on this, Shakira does indeed make a wolf noise. (Amazing.)

» As opening lines about werewolfism go, "a domesticated girl, that's all you ask of me - darling it is no joke, this is lycanthropy" is up there with the best. Definitely in the Top 20.

» The bridge has a slight feel of a song we won't name because if we do it might be interpreted as some sort of statement that 'She Wolf' sounds like the song in question, which it doesn't. But it does sound a bit like the song we are thinking of. It also has a great lyric: "I've been devoting myself to you Monday to Monday and Friday to Friday, not getting enough retribution reducing incentive to keep me at it."

» Best line: "LIKE A COFFEE MACHINE IN AN OFFICE".

» There's a sort of harmonised vocodered filtery "there's a she wolf in disguise, coming out, coming out, coming out" bit at the beginning; there are some brilliant Boney M 'Rasputin'-style strings near the end.

» Structurally the song's intro / vocoderybit / verse / bridge / chorus / postchorus / verse / bridge / chorus / vocoderybit / Boney M-style strings bit / tiny bit of chorus / sudden end.

» ONLY MAJOR FLAW: There isn't a bit where she goes 'Beyonce Beyonce' and then Beyonce comes and goes 'Shakira Shakira'. Gratuitous retreading of former glories fail.

» In summary: it's a new sound for Shakira but only Shakira could make a song like this and get away with it. Singers and songs often revolve in different spheres - sometimes seemingly reliant on whose A&R team is quickest to answer Ryan Tedder's emails - but 'She Wolf' represents a brilliantly tight bond between art and artist. It's fun and deranged, too, like pop music at its best sometimes needs to be.

In other news:

» Shakira has, apparently, gone 'platinum blonde' for this release.

We were joking about the bootlegging-it-and-putting-it-online business by the way. That would be ridiculous - and illegal.

The english version has leaked in full and I absolutely love it!

Lyrics:

SOS she's in disguise
SOS she's in disguise
There's a she wolf in disguise
Coming out coming out coming out

A domesticated girl that's all you ask of me
Darling it is no joke this is lycanthropy
The moons awake now with eyes wide open
My body's craving so feed the hungry

I've been devoting myself to you Monday to Monday and Friday to Friday
Not getting enough retribution or decent incentives to keep me at it
I'm starting to feel just a little abused like a coffee machine in an office
So I'm gonna go somewhere cozy to get me a lover and tell you all about it

There's a she wolf in the closet
Open up and set it free
There's a she wolf in the closet
Let it out so it can breathe

Sitting across a bar staring right at her prey
It's going well so far she's gonna get her way
Nocturnal creatures are not so prudent
The moons my teacher and I'm her student

To locate the single men I got on me a special radar
And the fire department hotline in case I get in trouble later
Not looking for cute little divos or rich city guys that just want to enjoy
I'm having a very good time in the heat, very bad in the arms of a boy

There's a she wolf in the closet
Open up and set it free
There's a she wolf in the closet
Let it out so it can breathe

SOS she's in disguise
SOS she's in disguise
There's a she wolf in disguise
Coming out coming out coming out

SOS she's in disguise
SOS she's in disguise
There's a she wolf in disguise
Coming out coming out coming out

There's a she wolf in your closet, let it out so it can breathe

Love the video and Shakira is definitely embarassing Britney's and Beyonce's comebacks. I adore the intro, cage scene, sawing off the vajayjay dance section and the ending.

The most ridiculous bit is the rooftop shoot. What in the world was Jake Nava thinking? Everything was outrageous, especially the outfit and the background.

Overall she gets an 8/10

I loathe this song. I just think it's a pile of crap. She sounds awful... the video is... well... the video is okay, but the song lets it down. And the howling... Awful. Just made me laugh. Haha. It's a shame because I loved her first album but IMO she's gone down hill a bit. :( Hopeful for the album though.

Her album sampler has been leaked featuring tracks: Why Wait, Gypsy, Good Stuff and Did It Again. It's very ethnic sounding (Shakira staying true) and it seems that she is getting in touch with her Arabic roots.

She Wolf set to be cub classic

Published: 11 Jul 2009

I WONDERED if ANDY MURRAY had been to many gigs when he once told me SHAKIRA’s was the best he’d seen.

But I met the Colombian stunner and all that “hips not lying” business was nonsense — this pop goddess’s do.

She’s 32 but has the waist of an 18-year-old.

I nipped over to West London to hear her new album She Wolf, and Shakira told me: “I wish I’d known Andy Murray liked my gig. I would have invited him backstage.

“I love tennis. He’s a great player and actually quite handsome. I like his accent.”

The new tunes are nightclub dynamite and should guarantee more chart success.

And I’m not just saying that because she’s fit. SAM ENDICOTT is one of her co-writers and PHARRELL WILLIAMS produced a track.

EXCLUSIVE: SHAKIRA ALBUM IS A DANCE-RIOT

11th July 2009
By James Cabooter

COLOMBIAN hip-shaker Shakira plans to hit fans with a “big bottom end” on upcoming new album She-Wolf.

The babe has hooked up with N*E*R*D’s in- demand producer Pharrell Williams, 36, to unleash her most dance-orientated opus yet.

Playlist’s James Cabooter headed to a London studio to hear Shakira polishing off the record, which is due out on September 21.

She said: “It’s all about the bottom end.

"I really wanted to explore different dance beats and cultures on the new record.

"I did my research and looked into different kinds of rhythm.

“Plus Pharrell is a genius with beats so it came together really fast.”

The end result boasts some of Shakira’s hardest-hitting club anthems yet.

She dabbles with North African melodies on a track called One More, while another funky highlight Good Stuff features a cool eastern flavour.

Shak, 32, said: “I’m always trying new things.

"It’s important for me to keep interested.

“But the main thing was I wanted to be able to dance to this record.”

Since conquering Europe with her last album Oral Fixation Volumes 1 and 2, Shakira’s Colombian fans have accused her of abandoning them.

But the girl is keen to do all she can to keep everybody happy.

She said: “I’ve been travelling a lot so I’m not in Colombia as much.

"But I always try and do both Spanish and English language songs.”

The kick-ass title track is destined to become one of the biggest hits of the year

Shakira said: “It’s about a domestic girl who breaks free.

I think we all have the wolf in us waiting to come out.”

And with help from The Bravery’s Sam Endicott, 34, and singer-songwriter Amanda Ghost, She-Wolf is destined to be howling its way to No 1.
