BoA is releasing her first U.S. album in Japan first! It'll be released in a 2 Disc-Set along with a new BEST OF. The U.S. disc will be released later this year in America under the title LOOK WHO'S TALKING.

A snippet of the second single I DID IT FOR LOVE leaked. And believe me: if this was sung by a Britney it would have gone to the top spot!! It's so addictive!

I DID IT FOR LOVE (feat. Sean Garrett)

Isn't Scream the B-Side to Hot Summer ?

Taller In More Ways - February 11, 2009 06:57 PM (GMT)
Probably... haven't bought the Maxi of "Hot Summer".

I like it as well. It's typical BoA, not too different from her usual stuff.

FFS this is amazing!
I'm so glad that I, for once took notice of one of the asian artists that everyone talks about.
I prefer BoA to Utada SO MUCH.

I'll write a review once I've listened to it a few times.

I found a fan-review from Buzzjacks' Kiseki

I Did It For Love; A perfect choice of song to begin promoting the album with imo. It sounds very now, with a slightly dark edge to it. BoA sounds great, the chorus is pretty addictive [I also love the bridge] and Sean and BoA compliment each other so well imo. 10/10

Energetic - My least favourite from what the previews made me believe, but I've found it stuck in my head since the full song leaked. Not the strongest track, but the verses are pretty strong. 7/10

Did Ya - I really like this, it's pretty fresh sounding. It's nice after two songs to hear an un-vocoded BoA. It reminds me of her "My Name" era in Korea. 8/10

Look Who's Talking - I like the egotistic nature of the lyrics, and it's catchy. However, I liked the live performances quite a lot, and I feel the studio recording falls slightly flat, due to the vocoding of her voice. Still, I enjoy it. 8/10

Eat You Up - FIERCE. The first time I heard it I went insane. It's my most played song iTunes with 350+ plays. Even now, I still don't find it boring. The chorus is catchy as f***, and the crappy lyrics just add to everything. 10/10

Obsessed - Awesome. I had a feeling this would be good from the preview, and I wasn't wrong. I'm glad they don't over-do the vocoder here, because I think it would have ruined it. 9/10

Touched - Very "Girls on Top" era I think. It's not a standout track to me, but I enjoy it. I don't really know what to say about it, it's just a good song. 7/10

Scream - From the preview, and hearing the original, I thought this would be my favourite track. I REALLY like it, but Iexpected it to be slightly stronger. Still, it kicks the Monrose version to the curb and it's good to feel some attitude from some lyrics. 9/10

Girls On Top - For me, it's the weakest track. Though I only think this because the original korean version is SO much better. It loses something in English, and BoA sounds stronger in her native language. Still, it's enjoyable. 7/10

Dress Off - I like this, similar to my opinion of "Touched" 8/10.

Hypnotic Dancefloor - Wow. This is the standout of the album, it's just SO good. The bridge is so epic. It should totally be a future single. 10/10

Negatives

- Although I enjoy all the tracks, I think they somewhat fall into each other too easily. it'd have been nice to have a ballad [since she's so good at them.]
- Vocoder. Unlike people like Britney, Ciara and the like, BoA can sing damn well, and also dance damn well, and do both at the same time. She doesn't need the vocoder, it sort of eliminates any personality.

Conclusion

I'm not disappointed in the slightest, and my hopes were high. I've been a BoA fan for 3, 4 years now, and this has been in the pipeline since at least 2005. It's fresh, edgy, BoA's English sounds good, and on top she's got a really good image to boot with promotion. Is it her best album? Not by a long shot. However, it's a hell of a lot better than most of the $h!t out there at the moment, and the fact we know how much she wants this, and how hard she's willing to work, she's got a determination and drive and that most people could only dream of having.

Overall - 9/10

This album is sooo samey and too generic and I usually like generic songs, but this one just made me yawn. I was very disappointed as I was looking forward to it. And I actually listened to the whole album 4 times.

Utada's US album, however, is very deep and artistic (despite most of the lyrics) and it's grown on me a lot.

Taking a short look into the formula that has brought star after star into the forefront makes breaking into the American market seem childish in complexity. All an artist has to do is get in with the best producers and get their label to actually care about promoting them, two very simple tasks. However they are undeniably hard to execute. Luckily for BoA, both seemed to be within her grasp, allowing her to get the likes of Sean Garrett and Bloodshy & Avant interested in working with her. The strange thing is while BoA managed to score the aid of some top producers, she didn’t exactly leave the studio with top songs- BoA is a painfully average debut, featuring inconsistent production quality, cheap lyrics, and a voice that sometimes sounds out of place.

When BoA’s production is on, it’s on. With pulsing beats and distinctive arrangements, tracks like “Hypnotic Dancefloor“, “I Did It For Love“, and “Eat You Up” are bound to appear on playlists across the country. In fact, these tracks are so sexy, they’re too sexy for BoA herself. Her bright, pure, crystal clear voice sounds like the call of a lost fifteen year old girl when placed over the record’s onslaught of sweeping basslines and hard-hitting drums. Not sultry in the slightest, her voice was clearly destined for something more innocent.

This is why more cutesy numbers like “Look Who’s Talking“, “Did Ya“, and “Girls On Top“, sound natural and comfortable for her. Unfortunately, these tracks are severely lacking from head to toe. The lyrics are cheap, aching to immaturely sassy licks that Britney Spears might have been willing to sing back in ‘00, but now even she has evolved beyond lines such as “This song is all about me / Damn right, it’s all about me.” And if only to compliment the lyrics, the beats they are placed over are just as dull. “Did Ya” is a mere recycling of “Buddha’s Delight” from the Music & Lyrics Soundtrack- sadly, the original is better.

BoA is a purely average record from start to finish- It provides some obvious potential hits and some obvious immediate failures. It is passable and would leave BoA to be long forgotten if it weren’t for her success in other countries. In fact, instead of even previewing this record, listen to The Face instead. It doesn’t take a familiarity with the Japanese language to recognize that it is a better album.

GRADE: C

KEEPERS: “I Did It For Love”, “Energetic”, “Eat You Up”, “Obsessed”, “Hypnotic Dancefloor”

I love this album.
I wonder if she plans to release it in the UK?

SugaNET.info - March 21, 2009 07:59 PM (GMT)
She needs to promote it big. She CAN BE BIG. Like, the next big thing like Lady GaGa but than in a different genre.

I say: WORLDWIDE RELEASE!

I love this, I have it ordered on amazon a couple days ago! but I've downloaded and listened to most of it, my fav is Obsessed that song is really fun

I watched her in some interviews too, she is really cute even with her broken English, you can tell she's trying

and Eat You up is so hot, the video is awesome too that girl can DANCE

chilln_chick2002 - March 25, 2009 11:16 PM (GMT)
Obsessed is my favourite song on the album. Really surprised how upbeat everything is. Just need to give it more plays before I rate/review it.

PS: I adore her broken English during interviews. She has improved so much since the last time I heard her (way back in December). The only thing that kind of annoys me is that her accent is really strong in certain parts of the tracks.

A brilliant video, not much to it, but still brilliant.

'Energetic' is the 3rd single from the album.

It was confirmed at the VMA Japan awards where she also performed 'I Did It For Love' with Sean Garrett:

Unfortunately, I find that track completely boring and repetitive.
What a shit end, to a shit era for such a good album
