Title: SSC Server Down Again
Description: Hurts Us Too

DX - February 6, 2005 10:43 PM (GMT)
Well SSC just went down, again, and that pretty much killed my hopes of squeezing in more updates before the Super Bowl. After all, Soaker Media is hosted on the SSC server and when it crashes, so do we.

<EDIT> Back up! Screw the updates, though, dinner and then big game. Be back later.

Commander_Gaunt - February 8, 2005 07:27 PM (GMT)
It isn't down too often, so we should be ok. Maybe when this site gets really popular, you could get your own domain, if you were really bothered by it.

DX - February 8, 2005 11:05 PM (GMT)
The domain does not affect anything, it's the server. We don't plan on buying new hosting until we grow sooooo large that Doom has to kick us off. :P That won't happen for a while, so no worry about that. Although I have found really cheap domain names: $5 bucks for up to 5 years. Very nice.

NiborDude - February 9, 2005 08:49 PM (GMT)
Yeah, I have been looking into paid services for another site I'm doing with other people, and paying for a domain cost like... nothing.

DX - February 9, 2005 11:12 PM (GMT)
You can get a free domain with some hosting packages. Then again it's usually better to buy better hosting and a cheap domain name.

DX - February 20, 2005 04:04 AM (GMT)
Well there goes the server again, but this time only the SSC forums are down. The site and Soakermedia are still up and running. And I was just going to make a post at SSC, too.

NiborDude - February 21, 2005 07:32 PM (GMT)
Don't get your panties in a bunch. SSC came back. It was not that big of a deal. We both know this kind of thing happens every now and then. B)

wetmonkey442 - February 25, 2005 01:15 PM (GMT)
Servers go down on all sites, thankfully when the server goes down on SSC it doesn't affect it the way it affected WWN. Twice.

DX - February 27, 2005 03:48 PM (GMT)
I think that SSC goes down far more often these days than it used to. Last year people panicked all over when it went down, for that was a rare thing. Now you just look at the status page and wait, no big deal. This forum has actually gone down only once since it was created. Just in case, I'm going to make a backup of the entire thing, every page, so if anything ever happens to it, I could restore it.
Or, if Invision Free shuts us down for some reason, I could put these forums on Soakermedia, fully postable.

Forceuser - March 20, 2005 01:43 PM (GMT)
The SSC server appears to be down again. I haven't been able to get onto SSC, the forums and Soaker Media today.

DX - March 20, 2005 04:04 PM (GMT)
The SSC domain name has expired. It might take a while to renew it, as I don't know much about the process once a domain expires. SSC is on a temporary url, read the topic on ISCF.

Hunter - March 20, 2005 04:59 PM (GMT)
you could temporarily move SM to a free server. ;)

DX - March 20, 2005 05:54 PM (GMT)
Soaker Media is available Here Thanks to Isoaker for figuring that out. B)

Commander_Gaunt - March 21, 2005 07:40 PM (GMT)
I can get on everything except the SSC forums now.

isoaker_com - March 24, 2005 02:22 PM (GMT)
As seen by the problems encountered by ALL sites on the web from time to time, it is still best to try not to rely on another's hosting account to keep one's own board and site running. After the Aquatica and WaterWar.net experiences, I've opted not to rely on any other forum other than the one I know will be up as long as I'm looking over it. You guys are doing a good job here so keep it up. While I know your ties with SSCentral are strong, you guys still should consider looking for your own host if possible. Soakerdom still needs places to turn to in the event the more common places go wonky.

B)

Hunter - March 24, 2005 02:30 PM (GMT)
I'm with isoaker, and this site will soon be one of the more commonly visited...give it time.

Spinner - March 24, 2005 04:45 PM (GMT)
Nice to see you here, iSoaker!

@ the Admins: SSCentral.org now seems to be up, so I've added your subdomain. You should now be able to access your site at http://soakermedia.sscentral.org. As for FTP access, tell me if it's not working and I'll try and set up whatever needs to be done. ;)

wetmonkey442 - March 24, 2005 06:37 PM (GMT)
Well Dux, I hope you backlogged most of the stuff on there, because it's missing a fair amount. Unfortunately this is what happens. I am definently in support of your own server. It might take awhile to get the site to the point at which you mihgt want to make the big leap.

NiborDude - March 24, 2005 08:52 PM (GMT)
Don't worry. All the HTML has been saved, it's just gonna be a bitch to load it back on. No worries. Soaker Media will be back to normal in no time.

Edit: We have been looking into buying hosting and getting our own domain name. I think the possibility of a different host and a different domain could happen as early as this summer. I have looked into several hosting sites. I'm possitive that Soaker Media will not be based off SSC for too much longer.

What stuff is missing? I wouldn't have thought any actual data would have been lost, what isn't there that should be?

I don't see anything missing that existed before. I think you mean the links that go to nowhere because that's what is being worked on or is needed. Like in the reviews, internals, etc. we could use lots more internals pics. *Cues Hunter*

wetmonkey442 - March 24, 2005 11:11 PM (GMT)
Well, the last update is from February, and we only have 90 gallery images

DX - March 24, 2005 11:14 PM (GMT)
Oh, I didn't catch that. So that's why some of the galleries weren't working! I'll just have to overwrite everything. I have all the files, so don't worry about that.

EDIT>>I can neither log in nor log out of SSCentral and therefore can't get the ftp password for SM. Could you [spinner] make a new one that's easier to remember or find the old one? PM here, as I am unable to post or access my member control panel at SSC.

Another edit: Nevermind! I just changed all the .nets to .orgs and the old ftp works again. B)

What do you need? I'm spending a lot of time bored...I would love a photo request...

DX - January 22, 2006 05:28 PM (GMT)
SSCentral appears to be down for a reason unknown to me. I just noticed this when I saw that my avatar wasn't working and that the SSC forums timed out.

m15399 - January 22, 2006 06:06 PM (GMT)
It seems to be back. I never even noticed it was down.

DX - January 29, 2006 07:53 PM (GMT)
The sever is having problems again. It doesn't appear to be down, but pages won't load. They do work, but they won't load at all. Weird.

Doom - January 29, 2006 08:41 PM (GMT)
I am spidering the forum to make some articles from my larger posts. Note that I am online continuously and viewing threads really fast. I figured that since Super Soaker Central isn't getting too much activity at the moment, this would be a good time to spider the forum. I am about 90% complete at the moment, so this problem won't last much longer.

DX - January 29, 2006 08:43 PM (GMT)
Oh, that explained it. But why did everything grind to a halt as well, including SM and the FTP? Shouldn't it have only affected the forums?

Nevermind, saw the explanation on iSCF.

Doom - January 29, 2006 08:47 PM (GMT)
No, it probably affected the entire server if that's what happened. I think technically you're not supposed to do this kind of stuff because it puts an excessive load on the server. I actually downloaded the entire SM forums, NerfHaven forums, NerfHQ forums, iSoaker.com forums, etc. with this method before and had no problems. Funny that I run into problems on my own site! Then again, I am downloading individual posts as opposed to threads as I was on the other forums.
