Title: IMPORTANT POLL
DX - June 18, 2006 04:03 PM (GMT)
There is no "maybe" or "don't care" option. This is probably SM's most important poll ever. Is it worth it to pay Invision the $50 plus [I would have to buy transfer too, I have no clue about how to run mySQL queries] in order to import these settings into the new forum? Would it be better to start fresh? Is it worth losing 7,800 posts? Would starting over be bad? Good? Would the import from 1.3 to 2.1 even work right? I bought 2.1, so I can't just install a 1.3 over it and then re-install 2.1...
I have no idea.

Anything but starting over. We've come too far to do such a thing.

I say that $50 may not be worth it but if thats what it takes, then do it. Anything is better than starting over, especially as you've come so far in such a short amount of time.

I voted for the first option mainly because it's the only way you're going to get a backup unless you write a script to do it.
I'm not too sure if this is worth the money however. From what I know, it costs a lot of money to get the database backup (this forum would probably be $40 because it depends on the size of the forum). That's $100 for a conversion. Not a good price if you ask me, but 8K posts makes it attractive.
Regardless, you don't really lose anything by not importing the posts. These forums will always remain online. I like the way vBulletin handles imports - you can do it any time and multiple times. I could import in another forum right now if I felt like it. If IPB had something similar, you could start over and then import when it is attractive, but they don't have that.
Here's a thread with more information on converting IF to IPB:

I voted for the first option, too, because it is definitely worth it. In the end, the choice is up to you; but if I were you, I would try to save everything. There is valuable information here for sure.

Looks like I'm the only one that voted no so far, 50$ isn't worth it, you can take the "important" aricles over here/there/wherever, through the magic of "copy-paste" I guess it could be that I haven't been here that long, but if it were my 50$ unless others were chipping in, no way, I'd rather buy a
CPS 2500 on ebay (of course it's a little over now, but... meh)

You know what's funny? I just bought a CPS 2500 for exactly $50!
I am going to buy the conversion, SM has $90 extra on hand. The only problem is getting the new forums to work properly. If you check them, you'll notice that you can't register [and if you can] you can't log in. Something went wrong and I'm still trying to figure out what.

The one file index.php still has some kind of permissions error. Everything else works the way it should. I still won't move the forum without having the new installation working perfectly, so any help would be much appreciated. B)

Can you post and/or email me exact what the permission error message is? While I have never installed those forums before, perhaps it may look similar to problems I've encountered during other installs and file issues I've dealt with elsewhere. Granted, if there are security issues involved in sending or posting the error messages, I understand. I'd like to help, but can't suggest much without knowing more about the problem.

The exact message from the log in screen. That is the admin account trying to log in. This goes for everyone, don't get any funny ideas if it does work, since I can override the admin account from the site CPanel. ;) I'm obviously not worried about security at this stage.
EDIT: Oops, that does not show you the screen. In fact, if you try again, it lets you in. However it has the old admin username and password in the remember me feature. Ha!
Here's a copy-paste of the 403:

Additionally, a 404 Not Found error was encountered while trying to use an ErrorDocument to handle the request.

While you chmodded the files, did you also chmod the various sub-directories as well as needed? Perhaps the index.php file is looking for something in a sub-directory it cannot access due to lack of permission though the file, itself, is accessible.
That's my first guess...

Maybe I've missed some new bit of news since I haven't visited SM in a while, and I checked for anything that I might have missed...but at the new forums site, one of the posts says that everything works fine now. Strange...

Starting over is not a good idea IMO. (even though I just joined)
