Title: Soaker Terminology

isoaker_com - March 25, 2006 08:48 PM (GMT)
I considered posting this on here earlier, but hesitated since some of these terms may seem a little 'off' when discussing modded or home-built water weaponry. However, looking again at the terms, some would still probably work as is, with the only one that is off would be the 'power' terminology.

At any rate, these terms aren't really new, but they are being a little more defined here. Basically, I'm hoping to use these terms in future articles, but want to get general community feedback on whether these terms make sense to most.

The Terminology:
========================================
Size - Approx Length - Approx Weight
--------------------------------
Micro - 5 to 15cm (2" to 6")- <0.5kg (1.1 lbs) full
Small - 15 to 35cm (6" to 14") - 0.5 to 1kg (1.1 to 2.2lbs) full
Medium - 35 to 55cm (14" to 22") - 1 to 2kg (2.2 to 4.4lbs) full
Large - 55 to 70cm (22" to 28") - 2 to 4.5kg (4.4 to 9.9lbs) full
Extra Large - 70cm to 90cm (28" to 36") - 4.5 to 5.5kg (9.9 to 12.1lbs) full
Oversized - 90cm + (36"+) - >5.5kg (12.1lbs) full

Power - Output - Range (average, not max)
--------------------------------
Minimal - <15mL/sec (<0.5 oz./sec; <0.5x) - <20'
Low - 15 to 60mL/sec (0.5 to 2 oz./sec; 0.5x to 2x) - 20'-40'
Mid - 60 to 150mL/sec (2 to 5 oz./sec; 2x to 5x) - 30'-45'
High - 150 to 600mL/sec (5 to 20 oz./sec; 5x to 20x) - 35'-55'
Extreme - 600mL/sec to 1L/sec (20 to 33oz./sec; 20x to 33x) - 50' to 65'
High Extreme - >1L/sec (>33oz./sec; >33x) - >55'

Shot Time (continuous shot output above 70%)
--------------------------------
micro: <1 sec
short: 1-3 sec
average: 3-7 sec
long: 7-15 sec
very long: >15 sec

========================================

Thoughts, suggestions, corrections, recommendations on the above terms would be most appreciated.

Soak on!

The range-output relationship seems a bit off. I've always found that the best ranges came from middle-sized streams instead of large streams. In fact, the riot blast on my first homemade [~60x] barely made it to stock soaker range. While the 1/4" [~7-10x] stream of my 21K reaches 60. Velocity is partially responsible for that, but still, when I have used math to find optimal nozzle size for best range, it is always a middle-sized output.

I also wouldn't call 3 seconds of shot time "short" although it is probably below average. I'm not exactly used to guns with lots of shot time, so I personally would never put 3 seconds in a short category.

As for the size stuff, it seems fine, except I think "oversized" is a bad word choice. Almost makes it seem like a gun that size is a bad thing. "Micro" is kinda odd, when a term like "tiny" hits the mind better.

Other than that, looks good.

The output/range numbers are meant for solid streams, not riot blasts, fan blasts, or other specialized nozzles. I understand your view on 'Shot Time', though. As I said, these terms are meant for the general user and those newer to soaking. In average gameplay, most don't do tap shots, thus many would feel that 3s is short.

You're right about the term 'Micro' for size. Perhaps it should be changed to 'Extra Small' or 'Miniature'.
