Title: New Homemade

DX - January 22, 2006 04:02 AM (GMT)
Yep, I've started working on a new homemade that is a culmination of sorts of the information I learned last year. Keeps the battle practicality of the APR line, tracked 1/2" pump, interesting reservoir and pc, steps up and down multiple times, and much of the pc is in a straight line with the nozzle for better laminar flow. This is truely a unique gun, one that looks like no other air pressure homemade I have ever built or seen before. Just another APH really, but with a weird design twist. I think that its only noteworthy flaw will be the length. This thing is much longer than I am used to, and not as easy to handle as my other homemades.

I am trying to come up with a unique name for this gun, right now all I have come up with is the Avenger, the Enforcer, and the Killer.

Pics? Will this be an in the APR series or an on the side thing?

For when you finish it:
Ranges?
Are you seeing any better ranges because of the more laminar design?

DX - January 22, 2006 05:23 PM (GMT)
It will be separate from the APR guns only because it doesn't look like them.

I am expecting somewhat better range due to factors like the smaller pump size and more laminar flow.

I have been taking pics along the way as I build. This is taking longer than usual because I don't want mistakes in length or leaks. Plus, 1/2" PVC is a real pain to create a tracked pump with. There's only room to stick a blade in there initially, so much of the track is sawed with only the hacksaw blade, which takes forever. My family isn't very handy, meaning I have a limited number of tools to draw from. A drill press or something similar would do the track in seconds. :(

m15399 - January 22, 2006 05:42 PM (GMT)
Ya, hack saws aren't the most efficient...
Are you going to make a writeup on this? I can't wait to see what it looks like ;)

DX - January 22, 2006 06:38 PM (GMT)
It will be the 2nd v2 article complete with step-by-step pictures. No video, though.

m15399 - January 22, 2006 06:52 PM (GMT)
Cool. Maybe this will get people started with specialized homemades (snipers, shotguns, etc).

DX - January 22, 2006 08:14 PM (GMT)
Well, I finally finished the damn pump. The track is kinda crooked, but after 2 hours of work, I'm not going to bother redoing it. Now to glue the gun together...

DX - January 23, 2006 12:17 AM (GMT)
The gun will be ready for use tomorrow, but unfortunately will not be usable tomorrow. An inch of snow, ice, and rain does not sound like great testing weather to me. :P

m15399 - January 23, 2006 01:46 AM (GMT)
Well, you can use your testing time to post the pics :P

Seriously, what does this thing look like?

DX - January 23, 2006 03:17 AM (GMT)
Picture an APR 1000. Now:
-Change the pc to a 2" tee with an extension at the top
-Put 2 2" screw on caps-tees at the reservoir, and continue the reservoir all the way to the 1st check valve
-Step it down to 3/4" at the valve
-Step it down to 1/2" at the pump
-Step it down to 1/2" at the 2nd check valve
-Step it up to 2" at the pc
-Step it down to 3/4" at the ball valve

-End result: very long and strange looking gun. I'll have pics after my midterm tomorrow. If I cut Track. Which is highly likely, given the nasty weather. :ph43r:

sbell25 - January 23, 2006 05:19 AM (GMT)
Cool, can't wait for pics. I want to see it before I build my next homemade. I'll also be interested to see what kind of range you can get with it.

m15399 - January 26, 2006 11:06 PM (GMT)
Results? Any pics yet?

DX - January 26, 2006 11:14 PM (GMT)
Haven't had time yet. School, then track, then homework, and by that time it is dark and cold. I haven't actually glued it yet due to past weather and then it being cold and me not wanting to go out to the barn to freeze while gluing it. But don't worry, I'll get to that on Friday [tomorrow] or possibly perhaps tonight, although not likely.

DX - January 27, 2006 11:35 PM (GMT)
My new gun will be ready for testing tomorrow! I have also decided on a name for it: the Avenger.

EDIT: I forgot to glue it last night. I kept thinking, "I forgot to do something, but what is it?" So I am literally right now about to carry the pieces out to the barn, so if I'm not on for the next hour or so, that's why. B)

I never glued the gun. The PVC cement froze and hardened beyond any attempts to salvage it. I can't glue until the temperature rises above 32 and stays above it. Not to mention the snow storm. Or the vacation next week. I would work on it while on vacation, but explaining why I've got all this PVC to airport security isn't a thrilling thought. So after the break, I shall buy a new can of cement and it won't freeze!

Woah! that thing looks pretty intimidating, and its not even glued or tested yet. At first it looks pretty wierd/unconventional, but when I looked harder I saw the resmblance between it and other homemades. Nice design.

sbell25 - February 18, 2006 03:02 AM (GMT)
Wow, that thing is huge! I agree with SG, looks intimidating and it's a nice-looking design too. I see now how the large tee makes for better laminar flow. Should be a real beast when it's finished.

m15399 - February 18, 2006 05:42 AM (GMT)
The PC looks more laminar than most APH's, and should still fire at 45 degrees pretty well. Why are there two caps on the reservoir, though (at least, I think that's what that is)?

Looks great. Can't wait for ranges ;)

Hunter - February 18, 2006 06:13 AM (GMT)
Hmm...interesting design....looks good.

wetmonkey442 - February 18, 2006 02:20 PM (GMT)
I bet he's going to pop in a couple schrader valves into the top of the PC(s), so he can double pressurize them for a more powerful blast. :P

Good looking homemade so far, I'm going to have to make another one soon.

m15399 - February 18, 2006 07:41 PM (GMT)
The picture doesn't seem to work anymore, but that may be temporary.

NiborDude - February 26, 2006 08:35 PM (GMT)
That thing is going to be hard to use. You're going to have to do a lot of taping, otherwise it's going to be bending all over the place.

DX - February 28, 2006 01:20 AM (GMT)
The double reservoir caps are there as a way to increase capacity [it is only a 2" PVC reservoir] and they look pretty damn cool, too. I do plan on putting a schrader valve into the top of the pc, since this gun is a culmination of everything I have learned about homemades.

I'm not concerned about bending as much as the length. You probably saw it over the break and saw how long the darn thing is. The right reservoir cap is also a place to grip the gun with the right hand, since it is a bit too long to grab by the middle area between the check valves.

m15399 - February 28, 2006 02:04 AM (GMT)
Has your cement unfreezed?

Tell us how it turns out as soon as you finish.

DX - February 28, 2006 02:12 AM (GMT)
Heh, it made it to 20 degrees today! The cement has partially vaporized after a month of being frozen repeatedly. I'm going to have to buy a new can. :(

DX - March 12, 2006 12:51 AM (GMT)
I've decided to call this gun the "N00b Killer." The stats should not be anything special, but the design and shape is meant to be somewhat intimidating to newer members of the other team. :ph43r:

m15399 - March 16, 2006 12:34 AM (GMT)
You said you had the glue? Is it glued yet? AGH the suspense!!!

DX - March 16, 2006 03:23 AM (GMT)
I have the glue. I also had a rough draft of a term paper due today. I spent nearly all night and all morning finishing it. Much of tonight was used up in the weight room, tomorrorw for shooting shows at RHS-TV. Friday or Saturday = gluing gun.

SilentGuy - May 5, 2006 04:03 PM (GMT)
Okay, I know this is a dead topic, but I've got a suggestion to use if you ever build "n00b Killer 2" or something like that. Basically, to shorten the length, you move the second check valve to the vertical part of the tube that connects the pump to the PC. Then, you move the first check valve to in between the two large 90 degree turns that lead to the reservoir. This will shorten the soaker immensely (by two check valve lengths), and it will only increase the height of the gun slightly (by only one check valve length). I've always like the design, though.

EDIT: Maybe you should change the thread name to read "n00b Killer." That would be a little less vague.
