Title: Midterms

DX - January 18, 2006 10:44 PM (GMT)
It's that time of year again...English tomorrow. They seem to put the easiest first and the hardest last [English, History, Latin, Physics, Math]. At least they go in order of difficulty for me because I love the humanities and hate anything with math in it. Expect less activity from me this/next week because I need to study. :(

Funny, I have English last and had Math on Tuesday. I had nothing today, but have Science and History tomorrow. I don't study much, just light reviewing every night. Cramming doesn't help much.

The Latin Midterm today was impossible...I would be really lucky to get a decent grade on it. Why do you get punished for sticking with a language for 6 years?

Physics tomorrow, of which I'm only worried about the math involved, which is basically everything. I used to love science; who won my old town's Science Fair as a 2nd grader in 1997? ;) I was going to have a career in the sciences until a few years ago, when "science" became just another "math."

I've always loved math and science. When I was a kid, I'd just do random expirements with vinegar and baking soda and random math problems when I got bored ;)

What I don't understand is how I went from being alone in the back of the room doing accelerated work to wishing I could drop math altogether. I didn't realize that I was switching from Math/Science to English/History until last year. My strengths simply flip-flopped while I wasn't paying attention. Now I'm doing things like NationStates and Water Wars, writing strong essays, while not having gotten an A in a math course for 21 about-to-be-22 straight quarters [11 semesters] or [5 and 1/2 school years]. Ok, I can still do some math... :P

Ugh, history is the most annoying thing in the world... besides pointless grammar. It's a bunch of random facts that are in no way connected. In math, you can figure things out on your own (if you had no idea how to solve equations, you could eventually figure it out). You can't just figure out when Rome fell, or when to use that instead of which. I don't mind normal gramatical things like capitalization, punctuation, sentance structure, etc. Thats all important so others can understand you, but who cares if you say "Someone lost their coat" than "Someone lost his or her coat"?

I love history! Well, military history, old military history [1763-1918]. Social history will make me fall asleep, and I am not fond of modern war either. Last year my teacher randomly made me stand up and present to the class a summary of everything I know about the Battle of Gettysburg in the Civil War. I talked for about half an hour, omitting about 3/4 of what I knew due to being nervous and rattling information off the top of my head.

As for English, spelling and grammar has never really been a problem. Especially within the last few years, I've become better at writing, with very few mistakes. The last time I spell checked an essay was back in 6th grade using an old Mac word processing program called "Clarisworks." Hence why I like English, and why I plan to go for AP next year. I've already been in AP history for 1 1/2 years.

I also prefer math and science. Mainly out of the fact that I like unofficial experiments and just doing it because its fun. Like putting rollerblades on and measuring the kickback of a watergun by how far back you move, or by changing the amount of oxygen intake on the bunsen burner to see if more oxygen makes hotter flame (got a sugar cube to start burning because of that one  ).

I find history to be very connected, but more in a cause and effect and why do we keep doing this same thing over and over again sorta thing.

I'll have to try that one! Sounds like fun

How much kickback were you getting?

English and History happen to be my favorite classes. I get B+s and A-s on pretty much everything. However Math and Science are definently not my favorite subjects. I got B-s for those midterms.
