Title: To 8000?
Description: can we still do it

LIGHT ANNIHILATOR - October 16, 2005 01:00 AM (GMT)
We have shifted our goal from 10,000 posts to 8,000 by years end. But it's mid october and we only have 5700 posts, and while I think we can still do it, it now seems less and less likley each day. So do think we can still do it? I do. B)

Well, no one has really done anything interesting recently (except Doom's new homemade). If people started posting about things they are doing, we might be able to get there. The lack of topics has really slowed this board down.

I think that the average needed to reach that goal is fairly low. We need only a little under 30 posts per day to achieve the goal. After looking at today's activity that seems fairly possible actually. All we need really is a few good active topics to keep us going.

Doom - October 16, 2005 03:11 AM (GMT)
I think these goals actually cause damage. Very few people are capable of not posting too often with these goals.

To me, the goal all the time is quality posts and neat ideas, not only for special occaisons. Sometimes this goal works out better than other times. After 2 1/2 years of constant posting, I've got myself over 4000 posts at Super Soaker Central. This is only the result of daily dedication and constant posting. I don't think there has been a period where I haven't posted for over a week.

Simply put, stop caring and you'll be happier than ever eventually. ;)

I agree with Doom, we shouldn't care about how many posts we get; just enjoy water gun talk.

EDIT: It's sort of wierd to hear that coming from me lol.

Then how come you set a goal to reach 1000 posts so quickly. B)

Lol, I've changed my ways, and I was trying to beat Nibor lol

NiborDude - October 18, 2005 08:24 PM (GMT)
No matter the post count we end up with at the end of this year, I have to say we did considerably well because most people didn't know about us, and many people still don't know about us.

Hunter - October 18, 2005 11:14 PM (GMT)
Yes, we're doing very well considering the number of members we have.

Yep, this is exactly the kind of attitude that I am talking about. I think everyone did great, but we shouldn't concern ourselves with numbers, just discussion! I've seen forums with hundreds of thousands of posts, but barely any over a sentence long. That's much less valuable than a forum with more tightly-packed posts. ;)

Couldn't have said it better myself doom! Well, maybe I could if I knew how to properly manipulate the english language lol...

LIGHT ANNIHILATOR - October 18, 2005 11:55 PM (GMT)
The large amount of members we have had online for the last 20 minutes has greatly increased the number of posts. If we were always this active we would be well past 8,000. B)

It seems that the healthier, longer posts are getting us closer to this goal than you may think. If we get 30 posts a day (not very many more than the other day this thread's been around) we will be a little over 800 posts anyway. Quality and quantity can both be around here, assuming that we aim for quality. Whenever there's good quality, more people respond, and more posts are made, whenever there's good quantity and bad quality, nobody really wants to reply and we actually get less posts.

DX - October 19, 2005 08:25 PM (GMT)
I've also found that members respond more to new topics that make you think or require in depth answers rather than cliche's like "What's your Favorite Soaker?"

If we work to post throughly and make hearty new topics, they will create numbers naturally.

Doom - October 19, 2005 09:30 PM (GMT)
Yep. I'm seeing that effect in my homemade water gun thread. I'd suggest that everyone else tries something neat (not just make a concept or idea) and post about it. Next year I hope to see much more threads in that style everywhere.

LIGHT ANNIHILATOR - December 20, 2005 09:25 PM (GMT)
Okay I hate to have to inform everyone about the bad news, but with 11 days left we still have over 1500 post's left to make, and looking at recent activity there is no way we can get over 130 post a day. Sorry guy's but it looks like we will miss out 8K goal. :(

DX - December 23, 2005 01:41 AM (GMT)
Oh well. I wasn't expecting these bad times, so the goal looked reasonable way back when.
