Title: Image Replacement
DX - August 17, 2005 10:04 PM (GMT)
Well, many of the images I compressed for the gallery are un-usable. Taking out 10-20% of the quality was a terrible idea. Every new image will remain 400x300, but I will only take out 5% quality. That does mean that each image will take up a bit more space, but each one will look much better.
This only affects images on the site before the new SM redesign started. I now keep the raw digital camera images in a seperate folder as backups.
This also means that some old images may be dropped, more likely they will be replaced. If no replacement can be found, the old image might stand.

I agree, the current image quality SUCKS

Sounds like a good idea to me. I can hardly see some of the images. I remember when I wanted to see the internals of several guns, but they came out so small That I couldn't see anything but shape and color (not much detail). IMO some images have enough quality, they're just too small.

Exactly, its probably better just to look in the images for the gallery thread.

The largest size I can support is 400x300, for server space reasons. We can't keep drawing server space forever. I have 475 images waiting for addition, not counting what already exists! I could experiment with larger size images, but 100,000 bytes is the absolute limit they can be. 100 images in that scenario would equal just under 10 mbs of space.
If we want movies, every picture must be kept smaller. I can have the internals be bigger [I have the original size ones], but that will hurt us too.

I think poor gallery quality really hurts SM's popularity...

Well, the old images were shrunk, but the code was not modified. They are all pixilated, but the old site no longer takes updates. So ignore the old pics. If you want the original versions of those pics, fire me a PM. ;)

Actually I don't, because I made about 1/2 of those pics lol...If you could do both high quality pics and videos that would really rock though...
