Title: New Global Moderator!

DX - December 23, 2004 02:52 AM (GMT)
Wetmonkey442 has been an outstanding member here. He has contributed to the Soaker Media site and actively posts at these forums. Therefore, I think he deserves the reward of Global Moderator! Congrats Wetmonkey!

NiborDude - December 23, 2004 02:55 AM (GMT)
Yes, many congratulations! :P

wetmonkey442 - December 25, 2004 04:57 PM (GMT)
Hey, thanks a lot guys. I'll try to make the best of my new position, although I cannot promise to be around consistently.

DX - April 10, 2006 04:05 AM (GMT)
Crashdummy has been promoted to the mod position. Partially because evidently bad things happen when I leave to go watch TV for 2 hours and partially for being a quality member here who stuck around for quite a while and contributed a lot of good posts. B)

I may promote one more person since this whole event has indeed made me quite paranoid. In a utopian Soaker Media, everyone would posess the power to ban, move topics, etc. since everyone could be fully responsible with it. We are slowly moving in that direction, although there's so much status involved with the word "moderator" that it defeats the purpose.

Should we use a new term here at Soaker Media for mod positions? How about something like "First Citizen?" Cause I do have someone in mind who is pretty active and responsible enough for another one of these kinda non-moderator moderator job thingers.

Hannibal - April 11, 2006 12:10 AM (GMT)
I really think it would be good to give most long-time members the power to move topics and posts out of the viewable eye, and just a few of them the power to ban. I've been at less-active forums before where no one does anything about the spam for hours, because no one has the ability to.

DX - April 11, 2006 03:45 PM (GMT)
That's what happened here for an hour. I wasn't around, Nibor wasn't around, the other mods were not around, so the spam kept coming. There are now 5 "1st Citizens" as an experiment. Hopefully the problem will go away, the sooner the better.

isoaker_com - April 11, 2006 04:42 PM (GMT)
Congrats to the new mods here as well as those given additional priviledges.

Sadly, problems like spammers, flamers, etc never go away. There are just periods of peace with sprinkles of annoying times. Spring is one of the most common times for these type of events since, with warmer weather, more start thinking about outdoor activities.

IMO, it's a sad thing to see that there are some people out there with nothing better to do that spam a community board. It's not like it shows real intelligence or makes any sort of political statement. It falls under the pointless category. Sadly, there will always be pointless individuals around. Go fig'

Sorry, I don't quite see your point here...is it meaning that more will be thinking of going on a water gun board, or that boards will tend to be less well attended, or what, exactly?

Hunter - April 11, 2006 10:49 PM (GMT)
So...I'm confused...is everyone a mod now and some are global mods? BTW did I make the cut for 1st citizen? lol jk

Duz delegated a few members 1st Citizens. I guess since you hadn't been here for a while, he didn't chose you. And by the way, good to see you back! B)

Yeah, that was one of my more poorly phrased thoughts. :P

People start thinking of outdoor activities like soaking, but usually feel it's still a little cold to start, to they start surfing and coming across water warfare boards. Depending on the individual, they'll find the board strange, overkill, neat, so-so, or a place they can poke fun of or abuse by flaming, spamming, etc. Sometimes, the ones who are interested join and are good, but tell their friends who are more into causing problems about the site, then you end up with a spam attack. I've seen various attacks due to various, rather bizarre reasons. I still think one of the 'better' ones is when some guy declared 'war' on 'Aquatica'... whatever that meant. B)
I've also seen standard spam, pr0n spam, gratuitous swearing spam, flame attacks... oh well... can't please everyone...

B)

Hunter - April 13, 2006 01:44 AM (GMT)
Uhm...what's pr0n spam?

DX - April 13, 2006 02:51 AM (GMT)
I think he meant porn spam. We got a bit of everything in that attack. I still don't know why they chose here. Why choose the smaller of the three boards?

I would like to phase out the concept of "moderator" here at SM. In light of the recent event, certain members have the ability to stop future ones, but you know how I feel about the word "power." I have not liked the ego/power/status that such a title seems to bring to people. Hyper 9 and Cloud were examples in the extreme of the corrupting influence of having the word "moderator" under their avatars. It even happened to Iceman, one of the most respected members in soaking at the time! My feelings on this subject are kinda hard to explain. You would have had to be there during the dark days of the golden days of the summer of 2004 at SSC. I owe this strange view of mod power completely to Cloud [Soakologist]. You wonder why I still refuse to edit any poll and still throw my weight against the idea of ever returning to a central forum system like Aquatica? :ph43r:

So if you didn't get any boost, please don't take offense to it, it's not "power" at SM, here it is more like a "duty" for those who have it. A rather progressive idea, but feasible since this is after all, SM. B)

Perhaps because they reckoned the smaller board would find it harder to respond to such an attack, whereas one of the bigger boards would have quickly dealt with the problem.

Thankfully, that is no longer the case, with more people who now have the ability to take care of the problem. I have not been online yet where there has not been a moderator or administrator on at the same time. I'm afraid, though, that SSCentral is and has been for a while the most vulnerable. Whenever I am at the forums, there are 12 guests on, and just me, or some other member. I don't know if I have yet been on when there has been a moderator or administrator on at SSCentral.

You've never seen me on SSCentral? I'm on at least thrice a day, often more.

I see you reading this topic, Mr. 12.180.196.125! When the trace process is finished, don't expect to be able to read anything on the internet, at least with your current ISP.

For the record, I'll often check SSC, but only briefly - if everything appears OK, I'll then move on. ;)

Ok, maybe that's why. It just seemed that whenever I check SM or iSoaker, there's a mod or admin on, but when I check SSCentral, there's only 12 guests on. :D

Super Soaker Central's defense is less obvious. I browse anonymously, and thus I do not appear on the online list. We've actually received our fair share of trash, but most of it was removed quickly.

I've also taken steps to prevent problems such as silent spamming and robot account registration. You can't send PMs until you have a certain amount of posts and you also can not put a website in the website field until you have a certain amount of posts. We also have moderate flood control enabled, so a massive spam attack would require more time to occur.

I'm disabling my anonymous browsing so you'll see me online more often.

m15399 - April 16, 2006 03:43 PM (GMT)
I'm only on the forum for as long as it takes to read everything. Sometimes it could be less than a minute. I don't see any point to hanging around any longer.

Hunter - April 17, 2006 05:43 PM (GMT)
Do I have enough posts for whatever it was?

m15399 - April 17, 2006 11:14 PM (GMT)
Are you referring to 1st citizen rank? That's not based on post count.

Hunter - April 18, 2006 12:46 AM (GMT)
No, I was referring to what doom said.
