Title: Do you use forts?

NiborDude - May 3, 2005 08:10 PM (GMT)
In a recent battle with WaterBridge, Dux and I both defended and took the same fort. It was a miraculous defeat that day. Every battle was a victory for us. What surprised us is that they waisted 20 minutes trying to take our fort, and it took us about 5 minutes to take it when they occupied it.

I've never had the use of a proper fort, so I have sadly had to answer "no". I would very much like to build and use one, though.

This one is Stonewall, a place that Spinner has probably heard of before on Waterbridge. The fort structure itself is not useful, rather it is the natural barriers and location that make it defensible. It is surrounded by thick brier bushes that prevent entry from many directions. A few paths link Stonewall to other places on the small, thorny hill. In our defense, Nibordude barricaded and watched the main entrance, keeping Belisaurius in check. I barricaded the paths on the other side that weave through the thorns. Guderian tried to force entry on 2 paths, both which merge into one, one that I was covering. He moved to a position higher and further away, allowing me to advance and occupy the central point, a position that covers all approaches to Stonewall on that side. He retreated, and got caught up in the sharp thornbushes on the way back to the main trail. Beli could not break in from the entrance side, and the depth of the thorns did not allow him to advance close to Stonewall, which rests in a clearing. So Waterbridge was not able to take the fort and gave up after about half an hour.

When we switched, Waterbridge decided to use our method of defense. Not gonna work! Nibordude made a distraction on the path side while I came around to the entrance side. Beli was countering me, but he assumed I would just climb up the path towards the upper part of the hill. Instead, I turned and jumped up on a big log that forms part of Stonewall's roof. I literally inched in on the log and drove him back. I inched in until I was standing on the corner of the roof and when Guderian dropped back to support Beli, Nibordude got in. They fled, and we were able to take the fort. All this happened in less than 5 minutes.

I almost never use forts. I just keep moving and hiding, using hit and run tactics. The only time I use forts is when I need a position to fall back on, which isn't much of a fort at all unless you think a 6ft diameter 3ft deep hole in the ground next to some bushes is a fort. :P

I guess a fort can have different technical meanings. A fort could be a stronghold where there is a wall and a roof. Or a fort could be a bunch of bushes and a hole in the ground. I guess it all depends on your idea of what a fort is.
