Monochrome via quickmask in photoshop?

What the hell is he talking about I hear them cry.

I have been sent this by an eminent practioner of the dark art of Photoshop. I thought mere mortals could not cast such spells, but it works it really does, try it.

This is an improved method of quickly converting an image into a black & white picture that offers a little more subtly of mid-tone tone detail than the ‘instant method’ via ‘desaturate’.

I admit that the ‘route’ appears strange but it works!

Quick-Keys / Shortcuts shown in brackets.

The Method

Open your image
    Select > All (Ctrl + A)

    Edit > Copy (Ctrl + C)
Click on ‘Quick Mask’ button - it’s near the base of the Tool Bar (Q)
The image will have a red cast – fear not!
user posted image
    Edit > Paste (Ctrl + V)
    The image becomes less red.

    Edit > Copy (Ctrl + C)
An invasion of ‘Marching Ants’ appear all over the image

Exit Quick Mask – click on the left-hand Quick Mask button (Q)

    Edit > Paste (Ctrl + V)
Voila! Monochrome!

In fact if you wish to do the whole thing using ‘quick-keys’ only, try this:

Open your image, then…..
Ctrl + A
Ctrl + C
Q
Ctrl + V
Ctrl + C
Q
Ctrl + V

And there you have it!

Tip:
By making the steps listed into an ‘Action’ the process can take place at the click of an icon/f key/ button.
