Cats training squad, 1985. that's probably me, third from left, second row, hard to tell with no numbers on half the jerseys. white helmet in the front row is probably Ron Zentner, the original QB - American players wore white helmets with an A on the back at that time, a great aid to linebackers and QBs alike...

Cats v Oxford Buldogs, at Loftus Road, 1985.

the Budweiser Varsity Bowl!! #13 ( standing ) would be Simon Kucziak, our local QB. Looks like a half-back run through the #1 slot, between the defensive end and the nose tackle - a great favourite at the time. Few players could manage forward passes reliably so most teams played in 3 - 4 defences or 4 - 4 lineups with one cornerback. Sweeps were also very common, especially the 48 sweep which was almost the Cats trademark at the time. Note that the blocking has completely missed the defensive end ( #99 ), who is in the Cambridge backfield... #55 is probably the Oxford inside linebacker in a 3 - 4 lineup, #52 would be the outside linebacker on the weak side, because most teams lined up with the strong side on the right. #55 has a Cats player laying across his legs, so the original play was probably an attempt to force a hole here which ended as a pile-up!

note CAMBRIDGE lettering on the jersey, no names on the back though... the jerseys were given out on selection days, and players didn't always keep the same numbers. Im played as #60 and #61 at different times, plus once at tight end wearing #84

that varsity bowl game at loftus road was the first american football game i ever went to. i've only ever missed one cats game since then, a post-season friendly against braintree scorpions at the end of 1986.

which means i've been present at 214 out of 227 all-time cats games (missing only the 1985 season and the game mentioned above), including 201 consecutive games.

well, no 2 Son has just been to his first game.. he was half-interested in playing juniors, as an off-season fitness progtramme for rugby, but appears now to have decided that sitting in the sun watching someone else getting knocked about for a change, is a TOP way to spend a sunny afternoon!

I see Colchester Gladiators on the fixture list, another name from the past.. how many of the original names survive, and how many are continuous survivals?
