Cleveland Police were scrambling to identify the bodies of six women found in various stages of decomposition inside a convicted rapist's house of horrors over the weekend.

In a scenario ripped from "The Silence of the Lambs," Ohio ex-con Anthony Sowell allegedly strangled a series of women in his three-story house over a period of months - or even years.




Rotting bodies were found in upstairs bedrooms, the living room, a crawl space, a shallow grave in the backyard and another grave in the basement, police said.

"Not a pretty sight inside the home. I stood outside the home for about an hour and the stench from inside was overwhelming," said Cleveland Police spokesman Thomas Stacho.

Investigators were gathering DNA samples and dental records and combing through records of women reported missing since June 2005, when Sowell, 50, was freed after serving a 15-year prison term for choking and raping a woman.

Fearing the worst, some family members of two neighborhood women who went missing in April and June gathered in front of the house, joining reporters watching the police work.

A community vigil was being organized for Monday night.

All the dead women were black, and all died of strangulation, the coroner reported.

Police went to Sowell's house in a dicey neighborhood of southeast Cleveland on Thursday to arrest him for a new sexual assault and serve a search warrant.

Sowell wasn't home, but the smell was so bad the officers headed for the trash-strewn upstairs where they discovered the carnage.

A tipster spotted Sowell walking near his home on Saturday and alerted police, who arrested him without incident.

Sowell had faithfully met with his parole officer and filled out all his sex offender paperwork.

Neighbors knew something was off about Sowell, who smelled so terrible their eyes would water.

"He came into my store last week and reeked so bad, I had to open the front and back doors," convenience store owner Eli Tayeh told the Los Angeles Times.

"I asked why he stunk. He shrugged, bought his beer and walked out."

But people blamed backed up sewers or Ray's Sausage company, housed in an adjacent building.

"We kept away from him and he kept away from us," said neighbor Tamica Pierceton, 26. "We should have said something to someone. I wish I had."

Four more bodies found, 10 in total

Authorities say more remains have been discovered at the Cleveland home of a convicted rapist, raising to 10 the number of bodies that have been found there.

Police say four more bodies and a skull were found Tuesday at the home, where the remains of six women were removed last week.

Police Lt. Thomas Stacho says the additional bodies were found Tuesday in the backyard of the home where 50-year-old Anthony Sowell lives. The skull was found in the basement.

Last week, investigators said they found one body in a shallow grave in the backyard. The rest were inside the house. :puke:

Sowell is in jail and was charged Tuesday with five counts of aggravated murder and with rape, felonious assault, kidnapping.

Anthony Sowell, 50, was to be arraigned Wednesday on the charges, Cleveland Police spokesman Lt. Thomas Stacho said Tuesday.

The bodies were removed after investigators excavated the yard of the home where Sowell lives, WKYC-TV of Cleveland reported on its Web site.

Two coroner's vans arrived shortly before the remains were removed, the report said, and the bodies were being taken to the Cuyahoga County coroner's office.

Investigators have brought lights and heavy equipment to the home and are putting a tent around the yard, WKYC reported.

Police discovered the first six bodies Thursday and Friday after a woman reported being raped at Sowell's home. The coroner is attempting to identify the bodies found last week through DNA and dental records. All six women were black, and five were strangled.

Sowell is a registered sex offender and required to check in regularly at the sheriff's office. Officers didn't have the right to enter his house, but they would stop by to make sure he was there. Their most recent visit was Sept. 22, just hours before the woman reported being raped.

For the past few years, Sowell's neighbors assumed the foul smell enveloping their street corner had been coming from a brick building where workers churned out sausage and head cheese.

It got so bad that the owners of Ray's Sausage replaced their sewer line and grease traps.

City Councilman Zack Reed, whose mother lives a block from the area, said he called the city health department on more than one occasion.

"What happened from there, we don't know," he said. "It was no secret that there was a foul odor. We don't want to point fingers, but clearly something could have been done differently."

Reed said he and other community leaders want an investigation into whether police and health inspectors missed any signs that could have tipped them off to the bodies inside the house.

A registered sex offender pleaded not guilty Friday to an alleged attack that prompted a search and the discovery of 11 bodies at his home.

Anthony Sowell, 50, appeared in court Friday and entered not guilty pleas to counts of rape, kidnapping, attempted murder and felonious assault. The charges stem from Sowell's arrest last month in a Sept. 22 sexual attack - accusations that led to the search of his home.

Cuyahoga County Common Pleas Judge John O'Donnell set bond at $1 million on the charges and continued Sowell's $5 million bond from last week, when he was charged with five counts of aggravated murder.

Sowell nodded when the judge explained his rights and shook his head no when O'Donnell asked if he could afford his own attorney. Wearing an orange jail jumpsuit with his hands cuffed in front of him, Sowell appeared engaged and alert, at times bouncing slightly on his feet.

Gayle Williams, assistant county prosecutor, said the woman who accused Sowell of rape remains very fearful of him and is concerned for her safety.

"She was only breaths away from becoming another victim of Mr. Sowell," Williams said.

O'Donnell appointed Brian McGraw to be Sowell's attorney. McGraw, who was not in court, had no immediate comment when reached by phone later.

Remains of 10 of the 11 victims found at Sowell's home have been identified, and funerals for the women are to continue this weekend
