A gay advocacy group applauded the apology issued by Chiefs RB Larry Johnson on Tuesday after he used a gay slur addressed at reporters on Monday.

"Larry Johnson's apology sends an important message that there is no excuse for using anti-gay epithets," Jarrett Barrios, the president of the Gay & Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation (GLAAD), said in a statement.

Johnson acknowledged his actions, which included belittling coach Todd Haley, were inappropriate. "I did not intend to offend anyone," he said, "but that is no excuse for what I said."

The NFL and the Chiefs are continuing to review Johnson's remarks and could still hand down discipline. The team, with a bye this weekend, asked Johnson not to participate in practice until further notice.

GLAAD, which had called for the NFL to punish Johnson, pushed the league and the Chiefs for more action.

Said Barrios, "We are continuing to call on the NFL and the Kansas City Chiefs to use this unfortunate incident as a way to educate and start a dialogue with players and fans regarding the dangers of homophobia in sports." -- Sean Leahy

I'd like to see GLAAD and the US Justice Dept go after all the homophobes that reside on this board.
