Two off-duty cops - one an NYPD officer - shot their way out of separate confrontations with strong-armed robbers on Long Island on Tuesday.
The NYPD cop blasted a knife-wielding suspect during an attempted carjacking in Elmont.
The other, a Nassau County detective, killed a suspect armed with a baseball bat during a holdup at a Deer Park car wash, police said.
The NYPD cop, identified only as a 28-year-old assigned to Brooklyn, was in his late-model SUV, waiting to pick up a friend around 1:30 a.m. when two suspects tried to steal his car.
Willie Watkins, 18, pulled a knife and opened the cop's unlocked driver's side door, police said. The officer fired one shot from his 9-mm. pistol, striking Watkins in the shoulder. Watkins was arrested at a local hospital. The accomplice was still on the loose last night.
The Nassau detective was vacuuming his SUV around 3 a.m. at a 24-hour Deer Park car wash when he was attacked by two men, one of whom bashed the detective repeatedly with a baseball bat.
The detective, who had identified himself as a cop, fired four shots, killing Erik Johnson, 24, of Bay Shore, L.I. The accomplice, Amille Moore, 16, of Bay Shore, was collared a few blocks away, police said.
The detective had contusions and internal bleeding and was treated at a local hospital, cops said.
