Title: Do any of you guys take Martial Arts?

SoulReaver - July 13, 2005 01:10 PM (GMT)
well I am currently taking a martial art called Issenryu Karate
and i did 2 years of Boking.

I have a 2nd Dan in WTF Taekwondo, which is a very popular kicking-focused art from South Korea. It's mostly a sport style nowadays but we learn more traditional techniques at my school too.

My school also teaches Nunchaku and Bo. We also mix in some basic grappling and Judo/Aikido throws, as well as some Small-Circle Jiujitsu wrist/arm locks and stuff.

I also practice a style of gung fu called Xing yi Quan, which is considered an "Internal" martial art, in the same family as Tai Chi Quan and Bagua Zhang. The entire style consists of 5 basic movements (not 5 techniques, but just 5 ways of moving and issuing energy) as well as 12 animal forms that represent different ways of expressing each of the 5 movements. I truly believe this is the most forceful and powerful (in terms of how much physical force the human body can issue in a single movement) martial art in existence. If you ever watched the Jet Li movie "The One", this is the linear style evil Jet uses.

My style, however, I describe as Jeet Kune Do, because I strive to mix everything I have together so that I have no style at all. I also use my own style of the JKD on-guard stance and use the principles of strong-side-leading, interception, simple non-telegraphic movement, etc.

So the answer to your question is yes.

P.S.: Glad to meet a fellow fighter, man, I think Shinryu also does some martial arts too. I have a friend who's about to get a Shodan in Goju Ryu Karate, great style there. I don't know too much about Issen Ryu, what are the characteristics of the style?

lol. Rock Lee. This is how you do it:

I take Tae Kwon Do & Karate

end of sentence.

:P

Actually, I'd probably go on and type an Essay like Rock here did, but as he himself knows, i've done this in many other forums, and im tired (lazy)...

Yeah...

Moving to General Discussion.

I just love talking about this stuff, so I tend to be rather long winded on martial subjects.

FighterRed51 - July 14, 2005 01:19 AM (GMT)
i take issshinryu karate, im a son-q ( 3rd brown)

I could go long-winded, but the short story is that moving a lot hasn't allowed me to study one art in-depth for too long but rather exposed me to a wide variety of arts and techniques. I don't claim to hold allegiance to any one school except for maybe Jeet Kune Do (both he philosophy of being open to all things and the principle of keeping movements powerful and direct.) That said, I'm always open to learning as much as I can.

I used to take traditional karate, but then i was removed due to my violent behavior along time ago. So I created my own moves to go with what i learned into my own style of karate.

Rock Lee - August 1, 2005 08:15 PM (GMT)
" traditional karate"

What style? Goju, Shotokan, Kyokushin, etc.

Blake B - August 2, 2005 12:42 AM (GMT)
It was Shotokan.

I would seriously like to try taking martial arts of SOME sort.

I've always sorta wanted to do that......

Im not sure, though, if I have the endurance to handle such a thing, which is the only real problem.

Im also not very strong at all :/ (though that's probably not that much of a problem)

*EDIT*

On the plus side, though, Im NOT, however, a gigantic fat guy!

I weigh about 160 (currently), and am steadily losing weight. Which I dont have to put any actual EFFORT into, as I have a high metabolism anyway :)

I had been starting to get a bit chunky, though, for awhile. Now, Im not :)

Dont really hear of very many big fat dudes doing Karate and such, do ya?

Blake B - September 2, 2005 09:53 PM (GMT)
Heh, my cousin who's a big boy, he's currently taking Judo.
And my Uncle who is also fat is taking Sambo....
There's just not alot of big folks into the whole martial arts scene cuz' they think they can't do it.
When i spar with my uncle, he throws me around like crazy!!!

Lately, i've been "customizing" my moves so i can do them more effectively....

I use to take Taekwondo when I was younger, got to black belt and quit around there. Martial arts only helped me to stay fit and active, cause really...in a fight the first thing you should worry about is how you knock the guy down and beat on his face as hard as possible.

Aint it the truth!!!
But i tend to use some of my moves in a fight, since it clearly gives me an advantage over them :P

But really, all i ever worry about in a fight is knocking the person down and beat on his face.......i'm pretty sure everyone tries to do that most of the time!

Xenogias - September 4, 2005 08:34 AM (GMT)
Not me, I actually just try to make my opponent look as stupid as possible :P
