Title: I.D. Please ?

I got this from a guy here who is breaking down his system unfortunately this was all he had left. Anyway, he said he's had it for 6 months and its been doing fine I figured since it was free i'd give it a shot. He thought it was called a sun coral but I've done some research and everything i've pulled up looks nothing like this. Any ideas?

Looks like a Goniopora or Alveopora to me. I can't tell for sure from the photo, but if there are 24 tentacles per polyp, it's Goniopora, which it looks like it to me, but if there are 12 then it's Alveopora. There are multiple species in the Goniopora genus, but looks to me like one of them, not sure of the exact one, I'm not an expert on this particular coral. Check out the site at: Goniopora.org for info on Goniopora.

o wow I didnt know what this was, i'm not sure I'm ready for this :o . it's in a spot with good flow and mid way down in the tank under the vho's and i've been target feeding it with the "two little fishes" Zoplan and Phytoplan.

I don't have any personal experience with this species, maybe someone here can offer some tips that may be helpful. Good luck with it!

I have these too, they were sold to me as sun polyps. They have to be fed every day and don't like the light. I have mine in a cave. I feed it twice a day, with a mix of Mysis Micro Vert, and Cyclop-eeze.

When I first got the coral I had it in direct light and didn't feed it. When it styarted to die I did some research and found that the way the guy at the fish store told me to take care of him was the opposites of how your supposed to.

They don't seem that hard to take care of if you feed it constantly. ;)

Whew! Thanks alot Aaron. That doesn't doesn't sound quite so bad I actually went and bought some cyclop-eeze today and have been feeding everyday however it sounds like I need to move him although he does seem to be quite response when the lights come on and draw back when they go out.

no prob ;)

I also heard that clown fish will sometimes try and use them as a host, and consequently kill them...

Well hopefully that won't happen, mine's hosted with a Rose BTA right now and he's pretty protective of it. That is an amazing relationship to observe!
