Title: Great Meeting!

Aquadome - March 17, 2008 02:51 AM (GMT)
Great Meeting last night.

Enjoyed talking with everyone and getting all the great Frags.

Thanks to Jena and Scott for hosting it.
And to the OMAS officers for all thier efforts.

Does anyone have a list of the Corals that were there last night?
I kind of lost track of them and need to identify some I have.

Jeff

Mine is looking pretty good so far. I noticed that the polyps were out the other day a bit. It hasn't started to color up yet, but it's only been a week, and it usually takes a bit longer than that to really make any real changes. I have mine in an area of pretty high flow, and pretty bright lights (~425 PAR). I had to move almost everything else down a bit, the lights were beginning to look a bit too much for the other frags, the only ones I left up higher were the monti and the stag, and the monti may be a bit soon if it doesn't look like it's liking the lighting.

Just moved him to a place with more flow, and is a bit higher in the tank. Hopefully that will work, we will see

Everything looks good except my favia. I have it mid level under T-5s. How is everyone else doing with it?

Aquadome - March 25, 2008 05:08 PM (GMT)
jjmcat thanks for the Frag list.
My Favia is also having some issues.
If tissue is lossing color should it be cut back before it spreads to the rest?

jjmcat - March 28, 2008 01:24 AM (GMT)
I lost my stag. The flesh peeled off of it but everything else looks good. What did the favia look like?I missed out on that one

kittyj - March 28, 2008 03:42 AM (GMT)
I think the Favia must be dead. It's has almost no color left, and the tissue isn't "plump" for lack of a better word. Everything else looks great. Jared, I'll give you a frag of the stag once it starts to grow. Think it's going to be blue.

TulsaReefer - March 28, 2008 03:43 AM (GMT)
My staghorn is doing well so far, it looks like it's beginning to encrust onto the mount. The others are hanging in there, and looking decent. The one that is surprising me is the monti, I noticed tonight it's grown down about a quarter inch on the area it was cut from. I've got to get it mounted onto something soon, it looks like it's going to be ready to encrust onto something larger.

We seriously need an OMAS session dedicated to the LEE METHOD OF CORAL PROPOGATION! :)

Much of it is just luck and situational, and I really enjoy getting little bits and pieces of things to see if I can get them to grow. I have a very old tank, 10 years now set up in the current place, a few years in OKC before that. I think this may help in some respects as it's a relatively stable system. And I also experiment quite a bit when I get a new little piece to see what type of light and current it might like the best. I usually give new pieces a month or two, and if they don't begin to grow I'll usually move the piece to a new place to see if it wants more/less light and current. I also keep most of my new frags in a separate tank that I grow frags and the like in. There are no fish or crabs in this tank just a few smaller snails. This makes it easy to put things in and get them going without worry about them being knocked over by fish or crabs. It also lets me make sure they are healthy and aren't carrying any parasites or other nasties before they head into the main tank.

What color has anyone seen in the montipora that was fragged at the meeting? Mine started out pretty reddish, but is now heading more toward a blue base and I'm not sure yet on the polyp color, if it will be the same or stay more reddish/purple.

Dunno, dude. I didn't get one that night, but I got one from someone that did a few weeks after the fact, but it was a goner. I tried to save it, no luck. I got a Chalice and a Leather? that night, and they seem to be ok, displaying purples and maybe a hint of pink.

jjmcat - April 12, 2008 02:15 AM (GMT)
The Monti is getting a blue base. The polyps are maroon in color so who knows what they will become.

Glad to hear you got part of the leather. The one that was fragged was from my tank, and is a descendant from one of the first corals I ever bought, probably 14 or 15 years ago now. I've probably had over 50 children from that original colony, two that are now as big as dinner plates.

AaronFillmore - April 15, 2008 05:32 PM (GMT)
Man! I moved the stag and now it's nearly doubled in size, and branched out 4 different places! Unfortunately the Favia has a tiny bit of flesh left, probably about 1/16 on an inch left :(

Has anyones stag gotten all the color back yet?

SoonerReefer - April 17, 2008 02:29 AM (GMT)
The stag frag I received is encrusting and getting very blue. Maybe Donny will take pics of it and post is later. The chalice is doing ok too.

Happy Reefing

Lori

Strange thing for me was that I took a small tip of the stag and mounted it, probably about 1/2 to 3/4 of an inch long. And then when we were cleaning up Jarrod found some little tiny (less than 1/4 inch) bits in the bottom of the container, so I bagged them up and took them home too. Mounted the little bits, as well as the bigger piece on separate plugs. And the little bits are actually doing better than the larger piece. The larger one is doing fine, but for their size, the little bits are doing better. So if they keep doing well, I'll have a spare that I can give away later this year. May take a while for them to get going well enough to moving them again, but maybe by summer they will be heading to the OMAS raffle.

The chalice is getting more peach/orange colored, or am I thinking of the wrong one. It's doing well, and has healed up all the cut sides. Looks like it will be pretty interesting overall.
