Title: Update on snail & crab purchase
Description: Update on snail & crab purchase
jokeloma - January 8, 2008 05:50 AM (GMT)
Sunday night we had our first officers meeting at the Pools home. Among many items for discussion was the pending group buy of 500 snails and 500 crabs at .75 each offered graciously from Scott at Premier Aquatics.
While OMAS has and will always try to support and encourage members to purchase locally it was brought to the attention of the officers that we may not meet the amount of animals required to do so.
After research and consideration the officers have unanimously voted to purchase from reeftopia.com. We will be buying 1-2 of the "reef topia special x2" and in addition we will be buying 24 peppermint shrimp.
This will allow members to purchase Astrea & blueleg crabs @ .49 ea and the nerites for $1.00 each. The peppermint shrimps will be $2.00 each.
Please move all requests and quanities to this thread to insure we purchase enough animals. Our goal is to have this order ready for pick up at the Snitz party on January 19th.
Please send all comments and concerns directly to me at saltclub@hotmail.com

I couldn't wait any longer . . . bought some snails & crabs from Premier this weekend. Green hair algae came in with a vengence last week.
Are Peppermint Shrimp useful for anything other than Aiptasia? I don't know much about them . . . what are the risks/rewards to owning? I had a serious Aiptaisa issue with the tank before the storm, but I also had a Trigger and a Lion, so couldn't get Peppermints to help out. As much as I hope the issue is thoroughly gone now, I'm tempted to get a shrimp or two as a safety net. Just don't want to do it if they're going to munch on corals or cause any other problems.
As for the Peppermint's personal safety, there will definately be NO Triggers, Lions, or any other type of agressive fish in the new tank.

Please put me in for 40 crabs, 40 snails and 3 Peppermint shrimp.
If payment is needed prior, please let me know.

Put me down for 30 crabs, 20 snails and 2 shrimp,,, and let me know you and when to pay. Thanks!!!
paulhtulsa - January 8, 2008 06:52 PM (GMT)
On the snails I am flexible. It can be either type and the count can be split to match what we need on the order to make it work.

We always keep one or two peppermint shrimp in our tanks. I can tell you that not all peppermints will go after aptasia but most seem to have an appetite for it. What I have seen first hand is if your apastia is huge the shrimp won't touch it. So you might as well put them in when you have none or very small aptasia.
The order comes with 12 nerite snails that will be available. We also have the option to add 12 emerald crabs for $4.00 each. The club can bring them in if it looks like they would go.
John & Kerry

I just wanted to say that I think this is poor form. I don't have anything against internet purchases, and I don't have a problem looking for a better price. My problem is that Premier made an offer. We all thanked him and signed on for placing the order. Then, we bail? for the internet?
Did anyone see if he would price match?
If we couldn't get the numbers, it should have been left at that and the club should have thanked Scott for his offer, but declined because we didn't have enough participants. To post a sign up list for an internet order is throwing it in his face.
This is why we don't have great relationships with our LFS.
Sorry if I offend.

John did send me an email about a couple of folks finding better pricing on the internet. Sorry, we can't match the pricing of a collector that decides to sell direct. It simply isn't worth the labor costs and time it associated with this order. I was made aware of it prior to the post. MSKOHL you do however have a very valid point....retailers cannot compete with internet - PERIOD, thus many of us have a very cynical attitude towards the club. I've seen it for the past 10 years. It's obvious to most retailers with all the experience in clubs you don't need our info so you can find your products online and buy better. I must say though I tried to reach out and help the members with a group purchase of any item the club wanted....I just can't compete with critters and for that I apologize. Maybe we can try another item at a later time [hopefully I'm not as cynical when that opportunity comes up j/k though not really]. By the way, has anyone thought about why T town lost 3 stores this year? Just something to ponder. Sorry had to throw that in to piss off the members that don't shop with us anyway!!!!!!!!!!!!!! The members that do shop with me I hope find my honesty amusing or thought provoking.
ReefJunkieOK - January 11, 2008 04:13 AM (GMT)
I'll take 20 snails, 20 crabs, and 5 peppermint shrimp.
Thanks,
John

We do appreciate the local stores and are very greatful for the offer that Scott had made. We also undertand that such a small animal does require more attention than something else would and that not only did Scott have to buy on a smaller scale but, also had to spend time, labor and so forth on a buy that would not have benefited him at all. Then if the animals did not survive he would be sought after by whom ever for reimbursment and such. Because this was such a big pain for him we tried to understand his position but, also meet a need that many of the members including ourselves shared. We hope that in the future that as a sponsor of OMAS that Premier and other stores will be able to meet another of our needs that is maybe not as time and labor intense. We are very greatful for the offers that all our local stores have put forth and hope that they continue.

As I said in the previous post....this "group buy" doesn't work for us - sorry! Be happy to try again on another item - preferably a dry good.

I have been reluctant to making any requests because I was not certain I could attend the meeting this weekend. I'm pretty sure I can make it, so if It's not too late I would like to participate in the group buy.
I'm looking to get about a dozen hermits and six snails, and three pep shrimps.
Hope I'm not too late to get in.
