Title: Green Slimer branching out!

TulsaReefer - January 2, 2008 03:00 AM (GMT)
A couple weeks ago I wasn't sure what was happening to my green slimer frag, three different polyps seemed to be bleaching out and I though something must be wrong, though the rest of the coral looked great. Then after a few days the bleached areas began to bubble out a bit, and in a couple weeks I had new little branches beginning to come out. I'm really excited as this frag is really starting to grow, as it had just sort of sat there for some time after I added it to the tank after CRASE in October.

Picture from the 2nd of December (sorry it's a bit fuzzy):

Are green slimers typically pretty fast growing?

Thanks, being pretty new to SPS every little common occurrence is something cool and new to me.

And I think it's almost a rule of reefing that there is at least one coral that each tank cannot seem to keep. And the strange part is it's almost always a different coral in each tank.

Another update. I'm trying to take photos of different corals every few weeks to keep a record of growth and changes. Strange part is I have three different slimer frags, all in slightly different areas when it comes to current and lighting. This one is by far the fastest growing, with the others not having put out branches yet. It's interesting how frags of the same type can be so different in the same tank. Here's the latest picture of the green slimer:

That's really great I can't wait to see it grow even more, someday maybe you can put together a timelapse clip

It's been almost 2 weeks, so another update of the slimer. It's still doing well, and has had a lot better PE since I upped my flow in the tank.

And one of my other slimer frags is now beginning to grow a branch as well. I think the increased flow has really made all of my SPS frags much more happy.

Another two weeks, and a new photo. Still growing pretty well, I'm starting to count the polyps on each arm now to keep track of growth since it's getting harder to tell one photo from the other. Still seems to be adding about 1 new polyp per week on each branch.

I'll be putting up new photo's soon, this little frag in the last week has decided to branch out three more branches, so it's really taking off again. I've seemed to have had a growth spurt on all my SPS, I had to go in and frag my blue stag today as it was beginning to grow into some other corals. And the first frag I cut from it a while back (okay, I actually broke it off by accident) has grown to a couple inches and added a branch of it's own now on the frag plug.

Well, two more weeks again and there are three new branches beginning to grow. They started about a week ago with a swelling in some polyps, and now they are definitely beginning to sprout out. I'm really amazed at how fast this coral has been growing. And if I count the polyps along the main branches, it seems like it has been adding about 1 new polyp along it's length each week lately. Can't wait to see where this guy ends up over time. It's no wonder why I have been having to dump in huge amounts of calcium compared to what I had in the past, I'm sure it takes quite a bit to grow like this.

In the latest episode of, "As the Green Slimer Grows"...

Looks like good growth over the last two weeks. I can count 8+ new branches that are in various stages of growth from the first swellings to beginning to grow out and build polyps. This coral is really surprising me in how fast it's now decided to grow.

One more update in my bi-weekly growth thread. Another decent couple weeks of growth, the branches are really heading out now, and it's really starting to look like a real colony, not just a couple of sticks. And I'm seeing even more branches now as well. Looks like I'll have to move either this one or the milli behind it in the next month or so, they are beginning to head toward either other. I'm really happy when I look back and see that the first branch began about mid-December, it's been three and a half months and the colony is now about 4 times larger than it was.
