For those looking for a very economical way to light up a fuge, I found a light that is on clearance at Lowes for about $10 that has worked great for me so far. My Chaeto is growing like mad (couldn't bring myself to say it was growing like a weed, seems so clichéd). It's a 55watt 6400K flourescent work light. Here's a link to a description:
Regent WorkLightI just put a scrap of plexiglas over my fuge area, and laid the light flat on it. Works great so far and I've been running it about 4 weeks now and my cheato increased from a piece the size of a baseball to about 2 gallons in size (yes I also have enough Nitrates to fertilize and help it grow, but still...) For $10.00 I really can't ask for much more. The light output is pretty good, and even seems to be in a range that will cause coralline to grow as I'm now having a problem with the excess light causing coralline to grow on the inside of my EuroReef skimmer.
I'm also doing a DIY hacking of 3 of these on a combined frag / QT tank which will be a 20 long that I'm building a custom hood/stand. While not a perfect lighting system, I hope to also use an old ballast to add a couple 24 inch 20 watt actinics as well and have a pretty cheap, 205 watts of light over the tank, much better than it has today with an old 20 watt strip light and a Coralife 2x9 watt mini light.
