Title: Part 1: the battle of the southern reaches

Lokar stood reading an expired army news page. In bold at the top of the page it read, the blood pact is here. Raise arms and fight for your freedom. Around him, Lokar saw only debris and the occasional dead Imperial soldier.

They were fighting a war they couldn’t possibly win alone. Aid was weeks away and their planetary defence forces were shattered and scattered across the baron lands of Lichenstine. The main assault was to commence and yet no orders had been given to the 653rd Cadian crack rifle division. Lokar was a sergeant, recognised for his outstanding bravery and stupid luck during the 13th black crusade.

The aerial bombardment had crippled the supply lines and turned every major city on Lichenstine into rubble. The first wave of blood pact landings was massacred by a resurgent planetary defensive effort. The present situation was just an hour after the second aerial bombardment and rumours were that the second wave of elite traitors had already hit the surface of the shattered world of Lichenstine.

Now gathering around Lokar, the remnants of his shattered regiment were beleaguered and had broken morale. Colonel Archon, commander of the regiment strode forth, arms on his wastes clenched and his eyes bore the grim news. “They’re coming straight for us, there’s no doubt about it” said the colonel. His bodyguard joined him as the remnants of the 653rd continued to gather around the city centre, a shrine to the emperor built in the days of glory and great conquest.

A small and undecorated man approached the Colonel. He was out of breathe and stood with his hands on his knees pointing in the direction of the oncoming horde. Eventually he managed a brief statement. “They’re here sir, all of them. “ In reply the Colonel pointed in the direction of the southern reaches and said to the breach, there we shall make our last stand.”
