Title: Rock
Description: what is true rock nowadays?

emperors champion akeris - October 11, 2004 10:41 AM (GMT)
Lately (as in last 2 years) there has been a decline in good rock. Now i consider good rock to be bands like creed, metalica, Korn, Nickelback and staind. But now theres bands like simple plan that dont really fit into punk but are too punkish to fit in rock.
All quality music categories are loaded with stuff that isnt pure for example not heavy metal but not rock.
Anyone else noticed that the standards of quality music is slipping and it seems all too easy to make money nowadays?

Vampy - October 11, 2004 11:13 AM (GMT)
Yes the standards of music these days is poor. However, you need to just dig a little deeper to find good music. Bands that are famous are often poor.

Metallica, Nickleback, Creed, Staind and Korn. I hate 4 of those bands. Metallica is the only band there I do not hate and I don't like them much either. I resepect them though.

Good rock in my opinion is Led Zeppelin and The Rolling Stones. These are people that are doing what rock should be about.

Check out: Stairway to Heaven, Whole Lotta Love by Zeppelin and Can't You Hear Me Knocking by The Stones for real rock.

If we are talking about Metal, then look no further than AC/DC. People argue that Metallica are better but they are wrong. Very wrong.

There are tonnes of fusion bands now. Nu Metal being the worst concept ever. However, it has brought some good music to light. Check out a band called Chevelle and download Comfortable Liar and An Evening With El Diablo by them.

Just give me a category of music or a sub genre. I.e. rock - Nu Metal is a sub genre, and I will point you in the direction of some awesome music. You may not like it, but I will give you some good insights to other bands that you possibly never even knew existed :)

Silas - October 11, 2004 09:54 PM (GMT)
Oddly enough i hate Metallica but do like Creed and Nickleback.

Personally though i prefer many of the older bands; Meatloaf, Guns and Roses, Queen, Judas Priest, Iron Maiden and so on.

Also quite like AC/DC and recently Nightwish. And some other music that i really recommend is not what the general populace would think of listening to. I've found that battle music is really good (soundtracks to Gladiator, Pirates of the Caribbean etc).
Check out some of Klaus Bandelts stuff. Tis good.

emperors champion akeris - October 12, 2004 02:32 AM (GMT)
Yeh sorry my examples werent too good. I like all 4 of those bands that all fit in different sub-genres.
AC-DC are ok i dont like some of their music though but it comes down to personal taste.

Vampy - October 13, 2004 11:35 AM (GMT)
Yes it comes down to taste. Your's for instance is poor! :P How can you think AC/DC are not the greatest Metal band ever? Are you mad?! :D

emperors champion akeris - October 15, 2004 04:26 AM (GMT)
Not to me they arent. I like some of their music but not all. I however like all music that ive heard from a lot of other metal bands. AC/DC is good but not great in my opinion and you wouldnt love them either if youd heard as much of their music as i have.

Vampy - October 15, 2004 08:39 AM (GMT)
Excuse me? I'm 23 ffs! Name something of theirs I HAVEN'T heard! My mate has even seen them live 3 times! Greatest metal band ever. Period

Pfft

emperors champion akeris - October 15, 2004 09:38 AM (GMT)
Right. I could argue that linkin park is the best rappin rock band because ive got every CD and heard every song. Im saying that i dont like them as much as you because i havent heard all their music. Im not saying i wouldnt think that they werent the best metal band ever but i havent heard enough of their music to judge them.

Vampy - October 15, 2004 09:40 AM (GMT)
Ah yes but on the same token I could argue against Linkin Park as I HAVE heard all therir stuff. I'm a well versed musician so I can comment on everything :P

Seriously, get Back in Black by AC/DC and Highway to Hell and name a band that have done 2 better metal albums :) IMPOSSIBLE I TELLS YA! :D

Silas - October 15, 2004 11:12 AM (GMT)
*sneaks in*

*coughs*

Quiet Riot is good

*sneaks out*

emperors champion akeris - October 15, 2004 11:20 AM (GMT)
Its down to taste. Im not a big fan of AC/DC and i live in australia where they were formed. No one really makes a big deal. Its personal taste i tell you. I love linkin park but hate all types of rap hip hop and R&B. Youre saying that back in black is the best because youre a big fan of acadaca. I could say that the end of all things to come by mudvayne was the best band in the world and youd have n9o grounds to say that it wasnt.

Vampy - October 15, 2004 11:24 AM (GMT)
Actually that is an incorrect statement. I say Backj in Black is amazing and I said it the first time I heard it before I was a fan. Musically it is awesome. What an opening track. Hells Bells? Tribute to Bon Scott?

Please. Mudvayne are doing nothing new. AC/DC were ground breaking. You forget this small fact

emperors champion akeris - October 15, 2004 11:37 AM (GMT)
Yeh mudvayne is a bad example. Ok AC/Dc is great and havent made a bad album but lets not start worshipping them. Come on they arent like a totally new concept of music, thyre a sub sector of music. They expanded on rock.

Vampy - October 15, 2004 11:47 AM (GMT)
They were one of the pioneers of metal, without which there would be no Mudvayne!

emperors champion akeris - October 15, 2004 11:22 PM (GMT)
Yeh but what im saying is that here in Australia no one makes a big deal about them so ive never got into them before. I dont know a lot of their music and i probably would agree with you if i listened to it. To be honest they are the only decent metal band to come from the land of OZ. Ill go next door and get back in black of the neighbours and then ill make a correct judgement on them.

Vampy - October 16, 2004 04:20 PM (GMT)

And that is highly arguable in itself being as most the member's were British :)

There is a big debate what nationallity they are but personally I don't give a fuck, they were amazing and that is all that matters :)

emperors champion akeris - October 16, 2004 11:52 PM (GMT)
Yeh that is true but you know bloddy australians (i live here im actually a new zealander) they take credit for everything that might have 1% aussie in it.

Erokose - October 17, 2004 12:13 AM (GMT)
Has anyone heard of Rammstein? They are a really good band. As for the standards of rock, I think that stuff like Lost Prophets, metallica etc. I like all those bands I think bands like Iron maiden still kick shit over other bands.

emperors champion akeris - October 17, 2004 09:39 AM (GMT)
Korn is also a great metal band as are sepultra, marilyn manson, godsmack, drowning pool, stone temple pilots and velvet revolver even though the lead singer is actually from the STP's.

Rammstein are good. Some of their music they have done with rappers and that brings down the standards a bit as the rappers were mainstream and they are hopeless.

Erokose - October 18, 2004 03:12 AM (GMT)
Yeah I kinda agree. Listen to the song Feure Frei Its heaps cool. Also I think bands like Sum 41 don't come under rock.

conman - October 21, 2004 05:45 AM (GMT)
:D Most of the bands mentioned in this thread are good (i dont like niklebak , never heard any of velvet revolver or godsmak although my bro has downloaded some of thier songs on my comp so i will listin to it later.

Hiway to hell is definately ONE OF THE BEST metal songs of all time , but i personaly like metalica better , as i could name alot of great metal songs done by them: Enter Sandman , Sad But True , Until It Sleeps , St.Anger and......Im gonna stop[ talkin about Metalica songs now.

I think one of the greatest metal bands of all time (they are not widely known) is DragonForce, they do Power metal , speed metal and melodic metal and are extreemly good at all three. They have two albums out and i have only herd (and own) one of them.

Iron maiden are also one of my favorite bands , i had two of thier albums and somehow managed to lose them both.

Linken Park are an extreamly good band , i have all of thier albums exept Live In Texas , for ovious reasons!

I like Korn alot, not asmutch as i used to , but alot.

AC/DC are known as an Australian band. :D

Vampy - October 21, 2004 12:29 PM (GMT)
Well let's see about the most famous members that have played for DC over their 30 year span...

Dave Evans: Original singer lasted only 9 months. Nationality: WELSH

Simon Wright: Nationality: ENGLISH

Mark Evans: Nationallity: AUSTRALIAN

Bon Scott: Nationality: SCOTTISH

Phil Rudd: Nationallity: AUSTRALIAN

Cliff Williams: Nationallity: ENGLISH

Brian Johnson: Nationallity: ENGLISH

Angus Young: Nationality: SCOTTISH

Malcolm Young: Nationality: SCOTTISH

I dunno about you guys but that looks heavily British to me opposed to Australian. All 3 lead singers were British and the Young brothers who were the nucleus of the band were British too. I stand by them being British ;)

If you want to learn more: AC/DC Just look at the line ups from when they first recorded an album. Consistently British line ups. :D

Darmort - October 21, 2004 12:44 PM (GMT)
real Rock these days is this bash and clash stuff that goes something like this.

"AndIAlwayCouldLikeIt!
InTheTunnelIWasPitted!"

and so on, or at least that my Opinion

conman - October 21, 2004 11:47 PM (GMT)
Yes I know they are mostly British , but they were formed in Australlia , and are therefor known as an austallian band.

(BTW , Im not Australlian im british)

Erokose - October 21, 2004 11:59 PM (GMT)
Some bands are just bash and clash, but then you get heavy bands that actully have good singing!

Rammstein for once is a really good band. I have a dvd of a 1998 concert in berlin and its awsome. I translated the words so I would know what they are singing about. Slipknot is a bash and clash and have no meaning except to be loud and singing about how much they hate the world. Now a recently emerging band In Australia, Butterfly Effect, ARE FUKING AWSOME! They have already released an album and have had lots of concerts and have played at the big day out. Something that really annoys me, once an Aus band gets really big, they ditch their country and go to america. Bands like butterfly effect have lots of meaning in their songs. Ive noticed a lot of big bands came from Aus. Like Grinspoon and Jet.

Well there's backwards logic for you. So if I go to Australia and make a piece of art and sell it, is the art Australian?

NO!

conman - October 22, 2004 09:12 AM (GMT)
:D I didnt say it made sense , i just said that its true and it is.

DOGMA that was an awsome movie! but what do you mean the DOGMA has arived?!?!?

Vampy - October 22, 2004 10:08 AM (GMT)

what does that mean? it doesn't have much to do with Music.

But Music Bands that might be Rock:
Green Day, they have gone on the RockISH side of Music
and thats is, sorry I couldn't come up with more

Vampy - October 22, 2004 01:28 PM (GMT)
No it doesn't have much to do with music but it was asked and I answered. Capiche?
As for music bands that might be rock? I don't think a lot of you understand how wide and diverse the genre rock is. Anyway, if we are talking Green Day, tho you may argue that they are rockish at the moment, I would never argue for them ever being punk. I mean, the Pistols, Buzzcocks, Dead Kennedies and Ramones - that is punk - Green Day are like a modern Punk but not proper punk. Music evolves, and so has rock.

Darmort - October 22, 2004 03:48 PM (GMT)
all those Punk Rock bands I like.

and you're right, I know nothing about Music, except the Songs, some songs are done with the Heart.
Take Maroon 5, they've done what are classed as execellent songs.
but then you can take Britney Spears, shes done the worst songs i've hever heard!
but that just me, I like "good" music;
Green Day
Busted is OK
McFly is good, and they're Punkish
Stranglers are nice
Red Hot Chilly Peppers are OK I suppose
Maroon 5 is good
Jojo has a good voice
Prodigy has good tuning
Spin in Motion has nice sound
Pulp is just to good for words
Only Ones have almost perfect songs
and so on and so on....

conman - October 23, 2004 01:04 AM (GMT)
:o WHAT MCFLY? ..................PUNKISH? THERE POP AND HEY SUCK , well i think so annyway.Even if they are good thier not in the least PUNK!

Erokose - October 23, 2004 07:30 AM (GMT)
Ok, Punk bands kinda annoy me cause they are singing about young peoples problems and a lot of them are like 30!

Now some punk bands are cool but people should really define what they mean by "Punk".

Things i know about McFly; They are younger then me. At least one of them lives in the same town, and one of em brought me a drink once...
Oh, and one has the same teachers i did when i was at school...

QUOTE (Darmort @ Oct 22 2004, 03:48 PM)
