Title: Vampires among us? HBO says "yes"

So I've just become aware of HBO's upcoming "TrueBlood" series. I watched all seven On Demand teasers last night, and I did some research and found out that this is based on a series of books, and that Anna Paquin will play the female lead, a human.

Am we not excited, or am we not?

This is from Alan Ball, the man behind SIX FEET UNDER.

Yes, we are excited.

Very, very excited.

They've done a great viral marketing campaign, with several entertaining websites (lovebitten.net, bloodcopy.com) and YouTube videos. Alan Ball is a mixed bag for me, but I'm looking forward to this.

I remember getting my first glimpse of Alan Ball on the SIX FEET UNDER supplements and thinking, "This guy needs to seriously get over himself." I liked a lot of 6FU, disliked a lot of it, too, and the series (for me anyway) really lost its way after a while but the show really did do something novel and I appreciate it for that and its cadre of wonderful actors. The show took something mundane (however grim) and built a real life around it... it'll be interesting to see if they can do the opposite with TRUE BLOOD, to take something fantastic and traditionally a bit hysterical and give it a sense of truth. If it becomes a kind of QUEER LIKE FOLK with vampires instead of queers, then nah.

I keep thinking of "Alien Nation," actually.

Dear Vampires,

I am bored of you.

Your friend,
Chris Stangl

...and Alan Cumming, too.

Actaully, I'll watch the vampires, but can we send Cumming back to Scotland for a few years? It seems that MTV's going to remake THE ROCKY HORROR PICTURE SHOW, and I'm afraid, Dimmy, I'm afraid...

This was by far the most ubiquitous viral marketing campaign at comic-con this year. I missed the panel but when we went to RockBottom on Friday before the PINEAPPLE EXPRESS screening, they had TRUBLOOD fake commercials running on all the monitors. One was a spoof of those match.com ads where they harp on being rejected by eHarmony. The TruBlood version was a dating service that matched humans and vampires.

Oh, that sounds fun!
