Looks like those of you who wanted a 16x9 version of this Don Siegel mini-classic have got their wish, albeit from German DVD producers EMS (under the title DER GROSSE COUP):
Not sure of the exact specs, but it looks as if this edition comes with a set of poster/lobby card reproductions in addition to the anamorphic video. German and English audio options are included (plus German subs, though it's not clear whether these will be compulsory with the English track)...
With COLOSSUS-THE FORBIN PROJECT now treated to a similarly fitting special edition (courtesy of the UK's Fabulous Films), it looks as if Universal's insultingly lazy region 1 DVD releases are being laid to rest one by one (buried standing up at the crossroads, hopefully).

The menu gives only a choice between german version and english version with german subtitles but the subtitles can't be switched of on the fly.
