http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MXI7x6ExPuc#This is supposed to get a U.S. release through Disney sometime soon, anyone know when?
I didn't realize this had already opened in Japan. It's up against the newest Pokemon movie (11th, I believe) and these have been getting better numbers of late. It's also up against the live-action adaptation of anime/manga hit series BOYS OVER FLOWERS (HANA YORI DANGO). So Miyazaki's numbers are apparently suffering a bit.
Here's Variety's news item on it:

I'm a fan of boys Over Flowers (manga and anime), but reports indicate the live action film is pretty dire.
I wonder how long the wait will be for a Ponyo DVD.
I've heard that Ponyo is scheduled for release in Hong Kong sometime by Lunar New Year 2009. So if my guess is right, it should come out to DVD by April 2009.
Wow. I had heard absolutely nothing about this until your post, Doran. I used to track what was going on with Ghibli and Miyazaki pretty closely, and would have been waiting eagerly for this for, like, a year. Some extraordinary imagery in that trailer, as usual. This is instantly on my Bated Breath List.
I'm crossing my fingers that PONYO will make it to the NY Film Festival this fall. Not terribly likely, but not impossible - they played PRINCESS MONONOKE (the Miramax dub) back before it opened stateside, and they had Satoshi Kon's PAPRIKA a couple years ago.
So, has Miyazaki announced his latest retirement yet?
POKEMON beats THE DARK KNIGHT!
The latest Variety International Box Office chart (for week ending 8/3/08) lists Miyazaki's film, GAKE NO UE NO PONYO, as #1 at the Japan box office, with a total so far of $48,900,561. POCKET MONSTERS 11 (the newest Pokemon movie) is #2 with a total of $25 million, which is pretty darned good for a Pokemon movie. Both have been on the chart for 3 weeks. #3 is the newest NARUTO movie, with a $2 million total for its first week. #4 is the live-action HANA YORI DANGO movie, 6 weeks on the chart, with a total of $56 million and change. So audiences in Japan should be in anime heaven.
The rest of the top ten are Hollywood movies, including four that I've seen, KUNG FU PANDA, THE DARK KNIGHT, INDIANA JONES/CRYSTAL SKULL, and THE FORBIDDEN KINGDOM. INDIANA JONES has been on the chart for 7 weeks and has pulled in a little over $48 million, which isn't bad at all. THE DARK KNIGHT is in its first week and is only at #7, having made just $1,311,725.
Just goes to show what can happen to a Dark Knight when he has some real competition. :P
