Title: FRIDAY THE 13th - Remake/Reinvisioning/Whatever
Description: First look at the new Jason

Hmmm, not quite sure what to make of the new Jason. Producer Michael Bay said this new version pretty much combines parts 1 & 2, but they have Jason in his part 3 hockey mask (proudly displays F13 Nerd Card). Anyway, it looks like Jason has a thyroid problem.

Thyroid problem, slouched shoulders, and a beer gut. Poor Jason.

The spit of Phillip Seymour Hoffman!

Here is the first look at the trailer (hand-held SDCC style):

Looks almost like a mirror of the remake of TCM style-wise (no shock as it has the same director).

And the same D.P. (course, so did the first TEXAS CHAIN SAW, but...).

So, here's an interesting problem.

When the much derided (and deservingly so, I'd assume from the reaction, never having made a point of seeing it) Rob Zombie HALLOWEEN came out, I floated this idea on the boards, just for fun - if remaking it was inevitable, how would you approach it?

And so, I ask again. But unlike HALLOWEEN (which I think we came up with some better alternatives than Zombie did), I can't for the life of me think of any legitimate approach to remaking FT13, at least in the sense of "new spin".

Partly its because it just is what it is - a crazy man killing a bunch of people at a summer camp. There is a slightly "folkloric" element to it, but not as strong as HALLOWEEN had. What I mean is both movies have elements of urban legend in them but HALLOWEEN also has the truly mythic holiday to spin from, whereas FT13 has, what, some long-standing cultural left-over related to the amount of people at the Last Supper?

So, that being a dead end.... well, it took them 6 movies to make Jason an official revenant. They could just skip right to that, I guess, but that does seem hard to sell if you're also going for a "more realistic" patina the filmmakers will inevitably throw over this (I'm fully expecting some interview bit where someone associated with the remake says how their teenagers will react realistically to the threat and not do stupid things like the teens in the originals - because the current approach to re-inventing is always about feeling superior to the original even while praising it, you have to or what's the point?).

Set in back in the 1950's? For no other reason I can think of than that's the source-bed era for many "mad killer" urban myths? God, if they do set it in the late 70's-early 80's I hope to God that's not an excuse for smug, clumsy "look it's the 80's" pop-cult moments.

Maybe there's some way to change the approach - play up the local town, play up the murder mystery aspect (something the original had but, obviously, this film's not going that way)....

I don't know. Anybody got any ideas? None of these need to be re-made but I could easily think of ways of tackling, say, a NIGHTMARE ON ELM STREET remake than a FT13 remake.
