Title: Vote for not-on-DVD films at TCM.com

This is a pretty long list of not-on-DVD films. Unfortunately, you can only vote for one (they ask for an email address to prevent people from voting multiple times). I picked The Secret Life of Walter Mitty.

The movies are sorted by the number of votes received, so you may want to scroll down the list a bit to see if one of your not-on-DVD favorites needs some support.

I don't know exactly how much this will influence the possibility of these movies getting DVD releases, but the page says that the list will be used to encourage studios that own these films to put them on DVD.

Oddly enough, one of the movies further down the list is Witchblade (2000), which I assume is the pilot for the early 00's tv show. I had no idea that that was considered a long-lost classic (it apparently managed to get 799 votes).

That's 99 more votes than Ophuls' Letter from an Unknown Woman had when I last checked the list, what a scandal. Make that 701 votes now that I've weighed in. (And yes, I know, the film is available via other-region dvds, but it's on the list!)

Raymond Tucker - July 16, 2008 08:17 PM (GMT)
EXTERMINATING ANGEL (currently at #32) for me. Curiously they date it at 1967.

Marty McKee - July 16, 2008 08:20 PM (GMT)
I voted for COME BACK, CHARLESTON BLUE and the CENTENNIAL miniseries. Considering how close together all the votegetters are, I'm forced to presume that every film on the list began with 700 votes.

Michael Blanton - July 16, 2008 08:25 PM (GMT)
I voted for THE FRIENDS OF EDDIE COYLE, which I don't believe has received a DVD release in any region, unlike THE EXTERMINATING ANGEL or JOHNNY GUITAR, two other films I considered.

I really wanted to vote for Thomas McGuane's 92 IN THE SHADE, but only 16 folks, now that I've weighed in, have voted for it to be released on DVD. :(

What a cast: Peter Fonda , Warren Oates, Margot Kidder, Burgess Meredith, Harry Dean Stanton, Sylvia Miles, Elizabeth Ashley, William Hickey, Louise Latham , Joe Spinell and William Roerick.

I voted for COME BACK, CHARLESTON BLUE.

That was actually the other film I was considering.

I lnow that COTTON COMES TO HARLEM received a bare-bones full screen R1 DVD release in the past. I have it. :P

It'd be nice to see them both released with anamorphic transfers in their OAR with some nice extras. :)

Bob Cashill - July 16, 2008 08:41 PM (GMT)
I put down GAMES.

This must be an old list. The Hitchcocks (NOTORIUS, etc.) have been out for some time, and are coming back again. As they're not hard to obtain, it's puzzling that they're here.

The CENTENNIAL miniseries is being released 7/29. Marty, you win! :)

Brian Camp - July 16, 2008 08:51 PM (GMT)
That's not much of a list. The bulk of them are things you can safely see once on TV and let it go at that. Or even ignore. Not things to own. There were only four I considered voting for:

THE BUCCANEER (1959)
DRUM BEAT (1954)
SONG OF THE SOUTH (1946)
FRENCHMAN'S CREEK (1944)

I went with SONG OF THE SOUTH, because it's an important Disney film and an early feature to combine live-action with cartoon animation, plus the fact that it's been unjustly maligned over the years.

And where's THE IRON MISTRESS (1952), one of Gordon Douglas' best films and the best film I've yet seen about Jim Bowie?

Hal Horn - July 17, 2008 08:02 PM (GMT)
I have voted for several on their site before, all of which have fewer votes than those listed. I believe these must just be the top 200 vote getters.

On the TCM site before, I've voted for:

GEORGIA, GEORGIA (hard to find early 1970's vehicle for Diana Sands, great as usual; written by Maya Angelou)

DIPLOMANIACS, PEACH O' RENO and HIPS, HIPS, HOORAY! (all Wheeler and Woolsey)

SO FINE (1981)

ST. LOUIS BLUES (1958)

....among others.

Island Of Lost Souls. I know it's probably a lost cause, but I miss it.

Notorious at #1 is really puzzling, making the list seem a bit wonky. But I was glad to see the 1990 TNT Treasure Island at #2, as I never got to see it completely. You'd think the combo of Christian Bale, Charleton Heston, Christopher Lee (a scary as all hell Blind Pew), and Oliver Reed would have got this out at least as a cheapie DVD by now.

Still can't believe this isn't out on R1 DVD yet. :(

I guess their list includes out of print DVDs cuz I own REBECCA...

Anyway my picks:

FREEBIE AND THE BEAN
THE FRIENDS OF EDDIE COYLE
THE FLIM-FLAM MAN

John Black - July 17, 2008 10:45 PM (GMT)
I voted for Curtis Harrington's GAMES, which I've never seen in widescreen. There was a VHS of it at one time, but it was P&S and possibly in the crappy ELP 6-hour mode.

Many of the titles on the list are either already available or have been announced this year.

I was intrigued to see:

OUR MOTHERS' HOUSE
VISIT TO A SMALL PLANET
SUSAN SLADE

If they had allowed me to name a film that wasn't on their list, I'd have selected BLOOD AND ROSES (1961).

Jeff McKay - July 17, 2008 11:34 PM (GMT)
THE MUSIC LOVERS isn't even on their list, but they have a bunch of titles already released and others already announced as coming soon.

They can take their list and shove it.

. . . my choice (which does not appear to have a place on this rather goofy list) for far too long has been BIGGER THAN LIFE (1956) - this one has been on DVD in France, England, and probably Mongolia for several years, but not yet in the country of its birth . . .

Dan Helmick - July 17, 2008 11:56 PM (GMT)
Add me to the "That's it?" camp...there are plenty of movies I want on DVD, but none of them are on that list.

The only title that makes my antennae twitch is THEY MIGHT BE GIANTS, but not even to the extent that I could be bothered clicking on the vote link.

To hell with their list. I looked up Island Of Lost Souls on voted for it on its TCM page.

The list was a good idea, but clearly has not been put together by someone who knows what's going on here.

John W McKelvey - July 18, 2008 05:18 AM (GMT)
Aren't a couple of those movies (like They Might Be Giants) already on DVD?

Brad Stevens - July 18, 2008 09:40 AM (GMT)
I love the fact that the entire world of non-English language cinema is represented by THE EXTERMINATING ANGEL, JOHNNY STECCHINO and the 1985 remake of GODZILLA! My vote would have gone to the complete version of Jacques Rivette's OUT 1, or one of the many missing Ozu and Mizoguchi titles, but they're obviously less important that THE LEGEND OF THE LONE RANGER (1827 votes).

Exactly! Am I the only one who wants to see the flip-side to HARD BOILED:- NOW YOU SEE LOVE, NOW YOU DON'T on DVD?

Guess that comes back to the OOP thing again - I'd love to get my hands on THEY MIGHT BE GIANTS, but a quick look at Amazon lists it as being new and used from... about 70 dollars.

Is this actually available anywhere at a sensible price? Or are there any plans to re-release it?

Marshall Crist - July 18, 2008 05:57 PM (GMT)
Voted for GODZILLA 1985 even though I have no interest in that cut of the film. O/W would have voted for SONG OF THE SOUTH. I thought I liked "old movies" but most of the titles on that list did nothing for me. I guess I mostly like pre-code stuff. Already own REBECCA, as noted earlier. Isn't TOPPER available currently?

John W McKelvey - July 18, 2008 06:37 PM (GMT)
Well... but at least it's out there and you could get it if you really wanted. There's so many films that aren't out at all (that aren't on that list).
