Title: THE BLACK BOOK on TCM 7/14
Description: Dare we hope?

Turner Classic Movies is showing Anthony Mann's marvelous THE BLACK BOOK tomorrow as part of a Bastille Day celebration. In the past, TCM has shown this in the same barely-watchable p.d. print available from Alpha Video, and it's entirely possible that this upcoming broadcast will be of the same version. But New York's Film Forum managed to secure an excellent 35mm print from Sony a couple of years ago for a "B Noir" series and one can hope that BOOK is part of the extensive package of Sony library titles acquired by the channel. So I plan to set my recorder for this....just in case.

This is worth a look whatever the print quality--but agreed the Alpha Video disc should be sent to the guillotine.

Already got my DVR set.

I recorded SKIDOO Friday night/Saturday morning to see if it was the widescreen version, but it was the full-frame version. :( ...again.

Speaking of TCM and "Black" I'm extremely jazzed the 1949 Welles-starrer BLACK MAGIC is on tonight. Long on my to-see list, my dvd-recorder's set.

I'll keep my fingers crossed for a better print of THE BLACK BOOK (a.k.a. REIGN OF TERROR) too. Robert Cummings is somewhat underappreciated as a film star, but he's effective here, as is Richard Basehart.

HCH

Alas, same lousy print as before. Too bad.

Yeah, I was in a back-to-black mode and DVRed MAGIC & BOOK. :)

This has been near the top of my wanted list for years (well since the list doesn't actually exist I'm just going to move it to the top right now). I bought the Alpha DVD in a heartbeat but couldn't bring myself to watch more than the first few minutes. Has it come out on DVD or VHS anywhere else in the world? Even gray market sources only duplicate the Alpha version.

I saw THE BLACK BOOK (under the title REIGN OF TERROR) at a mini-retrospective of Mann that ran at the Grand Illusion (a mini-theater) here in Seattle a few years back. A wonderfully strange movie, I thought, and I too keep hoping it will be rescued from PD. If SCARLET STREET and THE STRANGE LOVE OF MARTHA IVERS can be rescued from PD, surely this one could be too?
