Title: TVs which convert PAL internally

This past X-mas I purchased a Phillips HDTV. The other day on a whim I decided to set my region-free player (which is also Phillips) to multi playback so the disc plays in its native format. When I inserted a PAL disc the screen flashed a few times then suddenly it displayed the picture normally, and with a much sharper picture than I'd get setting the dvd player to convert PAL to NTSC (first thing I watched was Eureka's METROPOLIS which was stunning) Also the few PAL discs I have which are taken from NTSC play without the frame flap overlap that results from the NTSC - PAL - NTSC conversion. Maybe a lot of people were already aware of this and take it for granted, but I was pleasantly surprised. I can hardly wait to check out further titles.

Congratulations! It looks like you ended up with a multi-system TV, which is great. Which model # is it?

I reckon 99.9% of European TVs are PAL/NTSC compatible as standard.

Video projectors are usually multi-standard. Frankly, I'm surprised that all HDTVs aren't multi-standard. I love being able to watch my PAL DVDs in native PAL on my Panasonic projector.

Amazingly, my humble little Toshiba 26hf85 that I have in my "Command Center" plays PAL perfectly, as well.

Raymond - does this help the "speeding up" issue and make it less noticable? I know that a lot of US guys complain about being able to tell voice/music distortions watching pal discs on ntsc systems - although we in Europe don't tend to notice this at all on our pal systems.

I don't suppose it eliminates PAL speed up, since that's inherent in the film transfer speed of 25fps rather than NTSC's of 24fps. I will say, though, that I generally don't notice it unless I consciously think about it, and I have run into at least one PAL disc which seemd to have been pitch corrected (my R2 copy of AMELIE)
Also I don't know the model right off the bat, but it was a Philips 37" 1080i HDTV (most likely PFL5322D) I know it's interlaced rather than progressive, but while shopping the picture compared very well against the 1080p displayed alongside (in some cases better) It had mostly strong online user reviews so it seemed like a good balance of price/performance (even better now that I realize it's multi standard)
