Title: Lovecraft's THE THING ON THE DOORSTEP
Description: Stuart Gordon and Dennis Paoli return!

William D'Annucci - June 17, 2008 06:16 PM (GMT)
In the wake of Stan Winston's passing, I find myself yearning for any good news in genre cinema. Stuart Gordon has announced that it looks like he will be making a film of H.P. Lovecraft's The Thing On The Doorstep, written by himself and Dennis Paoli. Amicus Entertainment will be backing this one, as they did with Stuck. I am still wondering if this company has any connection with the Amicus of old, as they seem committed to the horror genre. Other forthcoming Amicus films include the It's Alive remake and From A Buick 8.

Full article here at Fangoria.

Oh, and Gordon says that the chances of a Re-animator remake are delightfully slim. :)

Great news! I'm already looking forward to this.

I haven't had too much interest in watching Fear Itself, but I'll probably record the Stuart Gordon-directed episode that's airing on July 3.

Sounds cool; but every time he doesn't make House of Re-Animator is a disappointment in my book.

I'm looking forward to it. Gordon is easily the most consistent guy working in horror today. I will also be tuning in for his FEAR episode. I don't buy the excuses he and Yuzna are throwing out about HOUSE OF RE-ANIMATOR though. When has Hollywood been afraid to back a Bush-bashing project?

Well, when has Hollywood ever been financially successful with a Bush-bashing horror movie? The only example of an "anti-Bush horror movie" I can think of is Land Of The Dead, which didn't exactly set the box office on fire. Outside of the works of Michael Moore, I can't think off-hand of any Bush-bashing films that came out before LOTD. Bush's 2nd term is almost over and I think Gordon & Co missed their window. Also (and I could be very wrong with my limited perspective over here in the Big Apple) I suspect that the large portion of that 18-25 male horror movie audience won't really go for a Bush-bashing horror film.

A shame, as everything I've heard Gordon say about their plans for House Of Re-Animator sounded hilarious. Maybe the script will surface one of these days.

Really? I thought the short stories were public domain. What's to stop someone else from taking on one of the Herbert West entries (well, aside for the target demographic going absolutely batshit)?

Personally, I wouldn't mind seeing a de-camped version.

From the Fango article:

QUOTE
Gordon is happy, however, that the RE-ANIMATOR franchise will not be joining the remake bandwagon, as producer/director Brian Yuzna, who owns the rights, isn’t leaning in that direction any time soon. “I don’t think Brian wants to see anyone redo it—he would like to keep going with [further sequels],” says Gordon, who isn’t fond of the duplication frenzy currently plaguing Hollywood. “I hate these remakes. I think they’re all terrible, and no one has improved on the original. What’s the point? The point is to make money and sucker in a bunch of poor teenagers who don’t know any better.”

There are a bunch of short indie Lovecraft films making their way to DVD. And I believe there may be a Re-animator film among them, not sure on that. So, you might get your wish, Craig.

Craig Blamer - June 18, 2008 07:01 AM (GMT)
It's not exactly a wish... I love Re-Animator. And I generally enjoy Gordon's work. But he seems to be taking a dog-in-the-manger (or more like Disney-in-a-manger) approach to a specific Lovecraft work. It's public domain (arguably) and his saying that Yuzna owns the property doesn't sound right.

I could be wrong, of course.

The thing that came to my mind was Joe Dante's overt HOMECOMING. While it is hard to track the financial success of a made-for-TV episode, I do know that it got mostly high praises.
