Title: Edward Yang: the recurring mystery

So I haven't been keeping close tabs for a while, but has anyone released any of Yang's films on proper subtitled DVD releases other than YI YI?

I've been dying to see films like THE TERRORISER and MAHJONGG for years, and there's a whole retrospective coming through Auckland ... right at the time that I'm scheduled to be visiting the States. (I have seen A BRIGHTER SUMMER DAY and CONFUCIAN CONFUSION on VCD, but would really welcome the chance to see them in a superior format.)

I can't believe that there's not a market. Does anyone know what the hold up is?

When Yang was alive and working, I'd heard that his sales agents wanted more money for his films than any interested US distributor could afford. I doubt this is still the case. An Eclipse Yang set consisting of TAIPEI STORY, THE TERRORIZER and A BRIGHTER SUMMER DAY would be welcome. Hell, I think a theatrical run of A BRIGHTER SUMMER DAY in the U.S. could do as well as ARMY OF SHADOWS or KILLER OF SHEEP if promoted right.

Hello Doug,

Steve started an Edward Yang memorial post that lists which Yang movies available for home purchase:

Also, if you have a local Taipei Economic and Cultural Representative Office (TECRO or TECO) in town--and Oz does have one--you can call them up and they'll send over 16mm film prints for a public showing. For free. See:

http://www.teco.org.au/main.htm

The movies, not limited to Taiwanese New Wave, are almost always English subtitled. From prior experience, the folks that staff these quasi-consulates are friendly and easy to work with. In fact, I wouldn't be surprised if they didn't have a hand in the Auckland retrospective. I must admit that most of the Edward Yang films that I've seen came from screenings made via local TECRO print leases (and they even provided the projector on occasion!) that, I re-iterate, do not cost a penny. A really neat, under-utilised resource if you're willing to make a phone enquiry.
