A sad day for monsterdom. He won Oscars for JURASSIC PARK, T2, and ALIENS, was nominated for HEARTBEEPS, PREDATOR, EDWARD SCISSORHANDS, BATMAN RETURNS, THE LOST WORLD, and AI, in a general made the fantastic cinema a better place with his inspired creations. He is keenly missed.

A true great. While I always enjoy talking about the obscure stuff, like DR BLACK, MR HYDE or how his make-up for the proposed PLANET OF THE APES remake was actually pretty cool, it's obviously the big films like those mentioned above that he'll be remembered for.
A look at his CV is awe-inspiring. There can be few people in the world of movies who have done so much to fire the imagination and thrill kids (little kids and grown-up kids alike).
Stan Winston is a true movie legend. RIP.

Oh, no. I'm a long-time fan and admirer of this giant. How genuinely upsetting - I was counting on getting to meet him one day.

Sad,sad, news. Stan Winston is a legend in the makeup effects business.
I didn't realize he was that sick.
"Sigh" :(

Way too young to die. Sad to hear that. I was always a fan of his directorial debut, PUMPKINHEAD.

I'm literally dumbstruck. Man. I've worshipped the guy for years, even before I knew his name, from the 70s TV movie Gargoyles all the way up to Iron Man. I was looking forward to astounding Winston creations for decades to come. Terrible news.

Ain't It Cool has posted some touching remembrances from James Cameron, Joe Dante, Rick Baker, Frank Darabont, and Jon Favreau.

Think about where Winston is right now. One day, you'll be there, too. Then you two can visit with each other for all eternity.
Is there money to be had in explaining RHS humor? I'm remembering his joke about musicals in some horror thread last year; I seemed to be the only one to get it.
Bob Gutowski - June 17, 2008 04:27 PM (GMT)
Hell, I've MET him and he baffles me every once in a while. Thanks, Joel.
I wanted to get Stan Winston to admit to me that most of Diana Ross' dancing in THE WIZ (as I've written here before) was actually done by a dancer he outfitted with latex pieces and a dental appliance as I theorize, having examined the film at great length.

With my luck, probably more money in explaining it than having it.
