Title: AstroBoy (1980s version)
Description: Japanese audio on the Anchor Bay R1 set?

I can't seem to determine a straight answer from scouring Internet reviews. Honestly I don't think Internet reviewers even have the darn things they review. Three of the four reviews say all episodes have both English and Japanese audio with subtitles. One says they are all English only. Most reviews lament the exclusion of the "Astro Boy vs Atlas" entry but a review of the Australian "Madman" release says it's included as a Japanese language bonus (with subs) - so I guess the episode is available. Can anyone confirm that every 80's episode is included in Japanese with subs? Sounds like a job for Video Watchdog.

PS: It's the 8 disc set with the red cover.

DVD Verdict:
Manga Video has released the entire Shin Tetsuwan Atom series in an 8-disc collector's set. While the episodes are placed in their Japanese running order (a list in the booklet gives running order for both English and Japanese broadcasts), this is the English-dubbed version with only 51 episodes.

Home Theater Forum:
We have the option to listen to the English dub or the original Japanese language soundtrack for the first time!! When listening to the Japanese track, English subtitles are available. You’ll notice that what is translated in the English dub is not always the same as what the subtitles say. Also, as I’ve noticed on Disc 1 when Astro is being created for the first time, the music is different on the English mix. It’s different than the Japanese version which has the opening theme music to 2001: A Space Odyssey as Astro rises for the first time.

Interestingly, there are 52 episodes in the Japanese Broadcast. Astro Boy VS. Atlas is the extra episode but it is not included in this set. My best guess why that is would be because there is no English dub for this episode so it wasn’t included in the order. If that was the case, it would have been great if it was included in the special features on disc 8.

DVD Talk:
This is the US dubbed version of the series which was altered from the original Japanese version of the show. The scenes that were cut are available as an extra on the last disc however. It's too bad that they couldn't have included the original uncut versions on the main discs, but the cut sections were never dubbed...

These shows come with the original Japanese audio track or an English dub, both in stereo.

It should be noted that in Japan there were 52 episodes in this series. For some reason one show, Astro Boy Vs. Altas, was never released in the US. This episode is not included in this set, which is a shame.

TV Shows on DVD
Fans of Astro Boy can watch the series in two ways; the original Japanese audio, or the English tracks created for the North American airings. I don't have any issues with the audio tracks; they're mono...

he episodes are also placed in the original Japanese order, except the second episode, "Astro Boy vs. Atlas," isn't included. It's an unfortunate omission, especially since the "Atlas" character appears throughout the series. I've also heard there are edits to some of the episodes, but I don't know the extent of the edits.
