Lon Huber - May 28, 2008 07:11 AM (GMT)
Subject says it all. Anchor Bay 2/1 sale at deepdiscountdvd.com, ends in a couple of days. I just got both Bava boxes for $30 and change.

Damn. Is it done already? The listing don't mention anything about a 2/1. Do you need a code or somthing?

Jason Minnix - May 28, 2008 02:04 PM (GMT)
No code; just follow the link below, tick the boxes & click "submit" to add them to your shopping cart. The discount is taken off automatically.

And thank you, Jason, for pointing THAT out.

I bit, and got the two Bava box sets.
Can anyone please tell me or point me to comparisons over the old Bava box set (Whip and the Body and a couple of others) and various other loose Bava titles (Twitch, Hatchet, Girl Who, Hercules, etc) that I had bought in the past with the films in these two new box sets please?

OK! I did. Already have many of these titles, but for $21.22 picked up Deodato's CUT & RUN, THE BLACK MARBLE, APARTMENT ZERO (SE), EYEWITNESS, THE AMATEUR and MARTIN & ORLOFF.

Yes, kitos for pointing this out. The Bava box sets generally price around the $50 mark in Canada, so this 2-for-1 sale is especially sweet.

OK, I just received my 2 sets. Can't wait to add them to my shelves. Now here's the question.

What order do I watch them in? I am a Bava neophyte, not having seen anything in years and only then having seen 1 or 2 movies. So re-arrange and recommend.

BLACK SUNDAY
BLACK SABBATH
THE GIRL WHO KNEW TOO MUCH
KNIVES OF THE AVENGER
KILL, BABY... KILL
LISA AND THE DEVIL
HOUSE OF EXORCISM
BAY OF BLOOD
BARON BLOOD
KIDNAPPED
ROY COLT AND WINCHESTER JACK
5 DOLLS FOR AN AUGUST MOON
FOUR TIMES THAT NIGHT

I would start with THE GIRL WHO KNEW TOO MUCH, BLACK SUNDAY, KILL, BABY... KILL, followed by LISA AND THE DEVIL, BAY OF BLOOD, BARON BLOOD, HOUSE OF EXORCISM, BLACK SABBATH and finish up with KIDNAPPED, ROY COLT AND WINCHESTER JACK and KNIVES OF THE AVENGER, FOUR TIMES THAT NIGHT.

What order do I watch them in?

How 'bout, chronologically? <_<

That's what I would do.

Chronologically, but, that's so linear...

How about by genre:

Giallo:
THE GIRL WHO KNEW TOO MUCH
BAY OF BLOOD
5 DOLLS FOR AN AUGUST MOON

Horror:
BLACK SUNDAY
BLACK SABBATH
LISA AND THE DEVIL
HOUSE OF EXORCISM
BARON BLOOD
KILL, BABY... KILL

Adventure:
ROY COLT AND WINCHESTER JACK
KIDNAPPED
KNIVES OF THE AVENGER

Comedy:
FOUR TIMES THAT NIGHT

Yes, there is a certain amount of overlapping (THE GIRL WHO KNEW TOO MUCH kinda qualifies as a comedy, for instance), but start with the category that appeals and run with it.

It really depends on what drew you back to Bava, besides the sweet 2 for 1 deal. Are you a gothic horror fan, a giallo fan, a general Euro-cult fan? I would recommend starting with Black Sunday, a film I love too much to give a tempered recommendation. It's a classic example of a great director's first film, filled to the brim with exciting ideas and showy camera work. Much like Welles with Citizen Kane, Bava is an excited kid who can't wait to play with every toy in the box.

From there, I'd say go where your interests lie. Putting some of his best early works (Black Sabbath and Kill Baby Kill) first gives you interesting perspective on his later classics like Lisa And The Devil. The Savalas film is a good capper to your first wave. After that, experiment with some of his most praised non-horrors.

Leave these for last, as they are lesser films that will probably only appeal to you if the Bava fever has really taken hold:

KNIVES OF THE AVENGER
ROY COLT AND WINCHESTER JACK
FOUR TIMES THAT NIGHT
HOUSE OF EXORCISM
(that is, if you really want to watch this crap)
