An English-subtitled promo reel for Barbet Schroeder's Inju: The Beast in the Shadows (Inju, la bête dans l'ombre) - a.k.a. "Inju: The Beast in the Shadow" - has been added to the Trailer Park subsite of GOMORRAHY.com. For those who are unable to play MPEG-4 files, a Flash Video (FLV) version of that promo reel has been added to YouTube.

According to a news release from international sales agent UGC International, the screenplay for Inju: The Beast in the Shadows was written by Frédérique Henri, Jean-Armand Bougrelle, Eitan Arrusi, and Schroeder, based on the novel Beast in the Shadows (Injû) by Ranpo Edogawa (a.k.a. Edogawa Rampo; né Tarô Hirai). The movie stars Benoît Magimel, Lika Minamoto, Gen Shimaoka, Ryô Ishibashi, Shun Sugata, Tomonobu Fukui, and Erika Niibo.

Here's a synopsis for Inju: The Beast in the Shadows from Cineuropa: "[Inju: The Beast in the Shadows] centres on Alex Fayard (Magimel), a novelist who comes to Japan to promote his new book. During his stay, he falls passionately in love with a geisha (Minamoto), who tells him she has received death threats from her lover. ¶ In accepting to help her, he finds himself face to face with Shundei Oe, a director of thrillers of which Alex is an expert in France. This encounter plunges him into a world of mystery and perversity, following the traces of a man hungry for revenge."

UGC Distribution is scheduled to release Inju: The Beast in the Shadows theatrically in France on September 3rd.

A big thanks for this "heads-up" Sheldon. I read (the excellent) novel last year and wondered if anyone would have a stab at it cinematically.

I'll definitely be keeping my eye open for this at the local cinema.

On a side note, does anybody know if this Japanese film from 1977 was/is the first to tackle Rampo's novel?
