Title: Need some suggestions regarding Italian dvds

Joćo Bastos - October 24, 2004 02:43 PM (GMT)
I'm going to order a few dvds from Italy, and I was wondering if you guys could suggest me a few.
What releases should I get? I'm looking for either films not available on dvd anywhere else, or whose best edition is the Italian one.
While I prefer euro-horror, I accept suggestions from any genre, as long as the dvd has an english or spanish option, unless the dvd is really good and in that case I might get it even without those 2 languages.

Also, what online stores do you guys use? I'm based on Europe, so I'm looking for italian or european stores.

I would highly recommend Medusa's very good 2-disc release of THE STENDHAL SYNDROME (La Sindrome di Stendhal), which features a much better transfer than any other release, as well as both cuts of the film: the longer Italian version, complete with the Veronica Lazar scene, and the shorter English version. Both cuts have English and Italian subtitles, with the Italian version being in Italian 2.0 and 5.1 and the English one being in English 5.1 only.

My preferred store is www.dvdland.it, which features very reasonable prices, although their shipping is sometimes a bit sluggish. www.dvd.it is significantly faster but also more expensive.

Medusa's DVD of Argento's NONHOSONNO is very nice- a good anamorphic widescreen transfer, and the superior Italian soundtrack in thunderous DTS sound with English subtitles. It also has a behind-the-scenes featurette and the Italian-language trailer.

The Italian DVD of Pupi Avati's ZEDER is also highly reccommended.

Soavi's _La Setta_-- great, great film, much better than _The Church_ & more of a trad horror than _Dellamorte Dellamore_.

I second the Medusa 2 dvd sets of both Dario Argento's NONHOSONNO (SLEEPLESS), and THE STENDHAL SYNDROME (LA SINDROME DI STENDHAL).

I also recommend these:

- DEATH LAID AN EGG (LA MORTE HA FATTO L'UOVO): by Giulio Questi. w/ English & Italian soundtracks. 1:85.1 widescreen. Giallo. The Japanese Import. Since Blue Underground seemed to have dropped this for their upcoming Giallo Collection 2 set, it's practically a must have. Shop around, these Japanese imports are pretty expensive. But then again, seems no matter where I went to look for it online, they were roughly all about the same price.

- THE SECT (LA SETTA): by Michele Soavi. English 2.0 & Italian 5.1 & DTS 5.1. Cecchi Gori. Italian Import. Isn't this also 20th Century Fox this one? It's been awhile ago but I seem to remember a shiny silver sticker on mine when I got it that said it. But I could be wrong?

- KNIFE OF ICE: Umberto Lenzi. English Audio. Widescreen 2:35.1. Japanese Import. Another pricey one.

- CANNIBAL HOLOCAUST: Special Limited 2-Disc Edition (numbered to 4,000 copies): Ultrabit. Directed by Ruggero Deodato. Anamorphic. English Audio. If you can't wait for the Grindhouse one, (Grindhouse who?), then this one I feel would do. I've had a few copies of this one, and this one seems to be the best. Newly remastered picture & soundtrack, & uncut.

Hope this helps a little. B)

Dean
