Dear Criterion Collection Newsletter subscriber,

We’ve got some exciting news for this fall, and we wanted you to hear it first.

Our first Blu-ray discs are coming! We’ve picked a little over a dozen titles from the collection for Blu-ray treatment, and we’ll begin rolling them out in October. These new editions will feature glorious high-definition picture and sound, all the supplemental content of the DVD releases, and they will be priced to match our standard-def editions.

Here’s what’s in the pipeline:

The Third Man
Bottle Rocket
Chungking Express
The Man Who Fell to Earth
The Last Emperor
El Norte
The 400 Blows
Gimme Shelter
The Complete Monterey Pop
Contempt
Walkabout
For All Mankind
The Wages of Fear

Alongside our DVD and Blu-ray box sets of The Last Emperor, we’ll also be putting out the theatrical version as a stand-alone release in both formats, priced at $39.95. Our Blu-ray release of Walkabout will be an all-new edition, featuring new supplements as well as a new transfer; we will also release an updated anamorphic DVD of Nicolas Roeg’s outback masterpiece at the same time.

As a special thank you to our newsletter subscribers, we’d like to offer you all $10 off any order of $60 or more placed on on criterion.com through Monday, May 26. Just use the code OFBT and you’ll also qualify for free shipping.

Enjoy spring!

Excellent news. THE MAN WHO FELL TO EARTH should look lovely in High Def.

Wait, since when did Criterion have CHUNGKING EXPRESS? The only R1 DVD I'm aware of is the one from Miramax, and the only Wong Kar-wai on Criterion I'm aware of is IN THE MOOD FOR LOVE.

Apparantly, they also have BOTTLE ROCKET and EL NORTE, neither of which they've released on DVD before. I don't know about laser disc.

Can't wait! Didn't Criterion do the laserdisc of the Miramax release?

So, how do 1.33:1 films look on blu-ray?

Are there any other pillarboxed films on blu-ray yet? I presume THE THIRD MAN and THE WAGES OF FEAR of will be presented this way...

There's a release of THE SEVENTH SEAL by Tartan in the UK that's Blu-Ray and region free.

I was just wondering the other day when Contempt was going to get a BluRay release. It is now my most anticipated BluRay release. I am also very interested in seeing The Third Man in 1080P. B)

I can't remember if it was formally a Criterion title or not - I think it was released under the Voyager label (Criterion's parent company at the time). I have the LD but don't have access to it right now - I'll have to check it later.

The CHUNGKING EXPRESS disc was a Rolling Thunder release via Voyager.

Not sure about Blu-ray, but HD-DVD has both THE ADVENTURES OF ROBIN HOOD and CASABLANCA, both of which were highly praised High-Def transfers.

I can vouch for those titles on HD DVD. They look noticeably superior to their SD counterparts on a 50-inch 1080p display, and I'd love to see them projected.
