Anyone have any idea what's going to be on the three disc set of Peter Weir's PICNIC AT HANGING ROCK from Second Sight Films (My Webpage)

They're not exactly going out of their way to promote it, are they? Here's the info somebody dug up

Faaaaaaantastic!!

I would scoop this up in a heartbeat if I didn't think that it would ever be ported over to Region 1. I may just grab it anyway on general principle. PICNIC AT HANGING ROCK is one of my favorite films and I've been meaning to write a longform analysis of it if I can ever get my marbles together enough to tie my thoughts on it together with my obsession over it.

I tend to watch this film with much the same expression that the girls have when in their ecstasy on the rock. Yes, even while sober. ;)

The last time I dusted off my Criterion dvd, I ended up fishing around on YouTube for snippets of the "Dream Within A Dream" documentary which I only found in frustratingly disparate snippets. I am very much looking forward to seeing this film get the type of treatment that we last saw lavished on CALIGULA.

Pity that there may be no commentaries (which would perhaps go against Peter Weir's desire for the film to retain SOME level of inscrutability), but it would be nice to hear from the cast all these years later. Which, I suppose we will in the documentary and interviews.

I've often joked that PICNIC AT HANGING ROCK should be remade, but my biggest fear is that this may someday happen. On the other hand, if this were some bizarre parallel universe in which someone asked me to write the script for a remake, I'd lose all shame and do it without thinking twice.

Thanks for the link, Dan.

Even if Criterion decides to do an anamorphic presentation of PAHR, I doubt if they'll release both versions and all the extras that Second Sight is putting out.

I'll definitely pick this up! ^_^

Some technical details, from the press release: here.

Eric Cotenas - May 6, 2008 12:01 PM (GMT)
It looks like the theatrical version will be 1.66:1 but what about the director's cut?

The Criterion disc was 1.66:1 but non-anamorphic. All of the other anamorphic releases have been 1.78:1 (including Umbrella's R4 reissue after initially putting out a 1.78:1 non-anamorphic transfer).

I went out to the rock last year and it's still spooky. The cafe down the front was selling a glossy, limited edition hardcover on the making of the movie signed by Anne Louise Lambert, which the gal behind the counter tried to pursuade me to buy. Korean director Kim Jee-Woon (A BITTERSWEET LIFE, TALE OF TWO SISTERS) gave a fun talk at a local film festival around the same time where he noted he wanted to head out to the rock before he left Oz as he was a big fan of the film. That SE looks enticing but I bet you the minute you buy it, Criterion will announce a Blu-Ray double dip.
