Description: ...I almost missed this by thatmuch?

THE NUDE BOMB is
coming to DVD.Be warned--THE NUDE BOMB is terrible and will look terribly dated, what with its self-serving setpiece on the Universal Studios tour, but I won't pass up the opportunity to Netflix it and see it again at 2.35. I'm glad at least to see it come out under its original provocative title, instead of the THE RETURN OF MAXWELL SMART it was stuck with on network television and VHS.

I was always curious to see it because '50s bombshell Rhonda Fleming is in it and it's the last feature she appeared in. She turns 85 in August.

I'll also be watching it again. I haven't seen it since its theatrical release. I remember a big story in FAMOUS MONSTERS prior to the theatrical release when it was called THE RETURN OF MAXWELL SMART before it was changed to THE NUDE BOMB. As a huge fan of the then-syndicated GET SMART show, I was excited about seeing the feature on opening weekend. There was a big line at the boxoffice. The theater was jam-packed. I got a lousy seat. The movie was dreadful, even for this then-teenager. No one laughed. For its belated VHS release, the tagline in the trades was "Before THE NAKED GUN, there was THE NUDE BOMB!"

Would you believe THE NUDE BOMB opened at #2 at the box office the weekend of May 9, 1980? Right behind the opening weekend gross of...FRIDAY THE 13TH.

I saw THE NUDE BOMB on its opening weekend. Not too nude but a bomb indeed.

I was stuck with THE NUDE BOMB as a secondary choice after going into the city to see THE EMPIRE STRIKES BACK and arriving to find it sold out. Oh well. I guess it isn't every day that you get to see a movie featuring Don Adams, Sylvia Kristel, Rhonda Fleming, Vittorio Gassman, Pamela Hensley and Bill Dana.

Has there been any word regarding single-season DVD releases of the original series? I haven't been able to splurge on the Time-Life complete series set.

Yep. Forgive my typo.

I bought the first season from Time-Life a few months ago; I haven't heard any details about subsequent seasons yet, but I'm having fun so far. It comes with a bonus disc of extras as well.

Time-Life only has an exclusive for GET SMART for a limited amount of time, and IIRC that exclusive expires some time this year. Once that happens, look for the complete series as well as the individual season sets to be available from other retailers, who I'd expect to offer more substantial discounts than T-L has to date.

I also saw THE NUDE BOMB on the big screen on opening weekend, by choice. The memory stays with me like those from THE FIENDISH PLOT OF DR. FU-MANCHU (which I also kinda, sorta wouldn't mind seeing again)

I saw it on a double bill in Long Island with THEY CALL ME BRUCE... what a one/two punch THAT was!

The FREAKS & GEEKS Halloween episode has a NUDE BOMB reference where young Sam tells his family he and Bill are going to see it, and his dad (Joe Flaherty) protests because it's a "dirty movie."
