Title: ISLAND OF TERROR ON R1 DVD
Description: What's the holdup?

I could probably gripe about THE PROJECTED MAN not being on DVD either, but IOT's absence really bugs me.
Anyone know the story on this one?

In the next Video Watchdog, we have an article in which Richard Gordon talks about the production of both this and THE PROJECTED MAN. The films are controlled domestically by Universal (in perpetuity, it would seem) and he has requested several times for the movies to be released on DVD (PROJECTED has never even come out on VHS), but no one at Universal seems interested.

Universal definitely has a recently transferred master of Island of Terror handy. It's not on the schedule now, but the movie's been in fairly regular rotation (and in high-def, to boot) on Universal HD.

Who knows, maybe they'll release another sci-fi/horror collection this September-October, tossing ISLAND OF TERROR together with THE PROJECTED MAN, CURSE OF THE UNDEAD, THE THING THAT COULDN'T DIE, CURUCU - BEAST OF THE AMAZON, SHADOW OF THE CAT, DARK INTRUDER and/or EYE OF THE CAT...
Anyway, those are the only 1950s/1960s Universal "creature features" I can think of that aren't already on R1 DVD, and (considering Universal's marketing tendancies) I doubt any would get solo stand-alone releases, but would rather be dumped into a set.
Hmmm, let's see the running times on those 8 flicks (using Leonard Maltin's Guide):
CURUCU, BEAST OF THE AMAZON (1956) - 76 min
THE THING THAT COULDN'T DIE (1958) - 69 min
CURSE OF THE UNDEAD (1959) - 79 min
SHADOW OF THE CAT (1961) - 79 min
DARK INTRUDER (1965) - 59 min
ISLAND OF TERROR (1966) - 90 min
PROJECTED MAN (1967) - 77 min
EYE OF THE CAT (1969) - 102 min (though scenes were added for network tv)
--Yeah, those could fit in a four-disc set quite nicely.
That being said, if Universal reissues COLOSSUS: THE FORBIN PROJECT as a widescreen R1 DVD (and yeah, I've seen the news on the upcoming anamorphic R2 release), I think that would be a solo title, like the upcoming JOURNEY TO THE FAR SIDE OF THE SUN and MAN OF A THOUSAND FACES discs.

Being Island of Terror's sister movie, shouldn't Night of the Big Heat be part of that package? Or didn't Universal pick that up, too?

I'd love to see ISLAND OF TERROR hit R1 DVD, uncut of course, unlike the Brit DVD. Got my VHS to hold me until then. And, if Universal releases another horror box, they need to throw in THE NIGHT WALKER as well. One of William Castle's best. Then I can retire my VHS of that too.

Island of Terror is available uncut on a R2 German DVD.
Night of the Big Heat and The Projected Man are available on UK R2 DVD. This is the UK version of The Projected Man which runs 90m. I beleive US prints only run 77m although I've only ever seen the UK print.

I've got that NIGHT OF THE BIG HEAT DVD; excellent disc with fabulous extras, including a Lee commentary and fully illustrated booklet with extensive liner notes.
