I don't know why but Hazel Court to me was the last true Queen of Horror. Her roles were few but she has an image in my mind that other actresses of her era don't. This is a sad way to end the day.

. . . she certainly caught my 14 year old attention when I first saw her in THE CURSE OF FRANKENSTEIN (1957), and kept it with her work in THE MAN WHO COULD CHEAT DEATH (1959) - does footage of her legendary "topless scene" really exist . . . her later work with Corman in three of his "Poe Films" is considered her best by Ephraim Katz in his FILM ENCYCLOPEDIA, and I have never seen any of the movies she made during the late 40s for Gainsborough, but it is most particularly her two Hammer performances I will always remember . . . sorry to see we have lost another admired actor this sad month . . .

That's terrible news. Coincidentally, there's a gorgeous color photograph of her on the inside cover of the new VIDEO WATCHDOG (No. 138), caught in a pensive moment from THE PREMATURE BURIAL. It's sad to think the next issue (or perhaps the one after that) will now be dedicated to her memory.

Sorry to read of the passing of one of my favorite filmic femmes.

Classy lassie! A name to conjure with, as Forry might say.

| Corman directed her in five movies. Like other "scream queens" of the era, Court's roles often relied on her cleavage and her ability to shriek in fear and die horrible deaths. |
Way to go with the accurate and well-researched reporting, Associated Press. <_<
I'll be ever grateful to Hazel Court for some fascinating childhood TV memories, particularly Masque Of The Red Death which did involve those qualities AP seems to remember the most. But she was much more than that. Bravo, Hazel. We'll miss you.
Of the late 50s-early 70s scream queens from Hammer, Amicus, AIP, Italy, and all the other wonderful places of gothic horror cinema... is Hazel Court the first to leave us?
