Title: Cinema related blogs...
Description: Which do you visit?

Brandon Crawford Smith - January 12, 2005 11:21 PM (GMT)
In the past few months, I've found myself visiting blogs on a more frequent basis. Someone on the old board let us know about daily.greencine.com -- which has become a daily stop for me -- and I occasionally visit the blogs at indiewire and wileywigginsblog.

Are there any other cinema related blogs that y'all can recommend?

(Slightly cinema related -- ok, moving image related -- the blog at boingboing.net had some fascinating links to unsecured googable webcams {security camera networks, traffic cams, public safety networks, etc.} that have been made "public access" thanks to the webcrawlings of google. Far out.)

For Asian movies you can check out:

Excellent question, Brandon. I'd love to find some myself. Here are a few you might want to check out:

Out of Focus is pretty New York-centric and occasionally crosses over into music and TV, but is usually pretty interesting.

Cinecultist is too New York for my tastes, but see what you think.

I used to go to Film Brain a lot, but it doesn't update as often as it used to.

I haven't actually read The Movie Blog in awhile, but check it out for yourself.

Netflix customers might like Hacking Netflix, which always has the latest news on what's happening with that addiction, um, I mean, business.

Most of those sites also link to other blogs that you can take a look at in your free time.

I'll also mention my own blog, Johnny LaRue's Crane Shot, just so long as you don't expect anything intelligent, witty or deep.

In addition to GreenCine, I really like <a href="http://www.twitchfilm.net">TwitchFilm</a> (which is frequently linked to from GreenCine, of course). Lots of Asian/genre action there, well worth a look.

I only discovered this one recently:

http://queryletters.blogspot.com/

Apparently query letters submitted to some guy in Hollywood. Very interesting and amusing reading. For example:

QUOTE
AMERICAN PIE meets THIRTEEN DAYS
"I have recently completed a spec script, THE VIRGIN MISSILE CRISIS, a dramatic comedy about a sixteen-year old boy, the son of a high-ranking State Department intelligence official, who loses his virginity during the Cuban Missile Crisis. During the course of the film, the boy takes his first steps toward independence from his oppressively quirky family and faces the twin challenges of sex and nuclear annihilation. This script features strong, appealing roles for major actors and has real potential as both an independent or studio feature. I look forward to hearing from you about the script."

Ok, here's my favorite scene:

FADE IN:

INT. LIVING ROOM - NIGHT

Soft moaning heard in the b.g. as camera comes up and over a couch. Fuzzy images from a black & white TV silhouette two bodies, moaning in ecstasy.

GIRL
Is this your first time?

BOY:
Yes.

KENNEDY (on TV):

It shall be the policy of this Nation to regard any nuclear missile launched from Cuba against any nation in the Western Hemisphere as an attack by the Soviet Union on the United States...

Actually, I'd watch that. :D

Joe Dante's MATINEE kind'a came close to what VIRGIN MISSILE CRISIS offers. Of course, it was PG and the characters were under-age, so Dante could only go so far.

I just checked the blog where this came from and a quick read of the first several queries reveals quite a few movies I'd much rather see than the critically-acclaimed drek currently in theaters.

You are correct, sir. The guy that handles the European reviewing for Nicheflix is going to be feeding us Euro news. And thanks for all the kind words ... we put a lot of work into it ...
