Title: Heads up CJ7 DVD Region 0! (on some players)!

Marc Gayan - April 11, 2008 03:15 PM (GMT)
Just received the new Sony Pictures Hong Kong release of Stephen Chow's CJ7 from Yesasia today, and although the box says "Region 3", it is, in fact, All Region. Just thought someone out there would want to know. Note: This is not the Special Edition, but the bare-bones, movie-only version.

ATTENTION: PLEASE SEE UPDATED POST AT BOTTOM!

This disc is actually Region 3 according to tests shown from a reliable source.

Weird... Maybe I got a freak copy somehow. All I know is that it plays in my Region 1 only Panasonic DMR-E810 with no problem.

Did the packaging of your DVD look like the one in avbuzz's dvd review?
check the link i provided in the previous post because that is the official Region 3 hong kong edition.

Yep, that's it exactly. It's an official Columbia Pictures/Sony DVD, not a bootleg. I'm 99.9% sure Yesasia doesn't deal in boots, and that's who I got it from. Update: Here's the REALLY weird part. It plays in my Panasonic with no problem (and believe me, this is a strictly Region 1 machine; NONE of my other DVDs from any other region than 1 will play in it, and I'll get a message telling me "Wrong Region").

Ran out of time earlier today and just now tried it on my portable Polaroid, & it won't play, and I get a "Wrong Region" message!!! WTH? Apparently, this is some anomaly with this disc and my Panasonic player!!! I've never encountered something like this with region coding before.... Very bizarre!

Meh...I'm gonna pass on this quick release and wait for a better DVD to come out.
This DVD is a single-layered and barebones release. Considering the fact that it's crammed with 3 audio tracks (Mandarin, Cantonese and Thai), you can't really expect the best quality with this DVD.

I'll wait...

The Hong Kong version of CJ7 just arrived from YesAsia. I popped it into my Region 1 Toshiba and, lo and behold, it does indeed play!
