Title: New dvd of MILL OF THE STONE WOMEN - opinions?
Mathias Jonsson - March 12, 2008 04:09 PM (GMT)
I checked out one of my local retailers and saw that he has a new dvd of MILL OF THE STONE WOMEN. Company is NEW WORLD ENTERTAINMENT, it has the dutch title, so I'm presuming it's a dutch release.
Anyone who has this new dvd and can compare it to the previous MONDO MACABRE release???

Correction:
It is not Dutch, it is a German release, the title is:
DIE MUHLE DER VERSTEINERTEN FRAUEN.
It is 16X9, 1,66 Widescreen.
Extras are deleted scene, trailers.

While I own (and have watched) both, the NEW and the Mondo Macabro disc, I couldn't really do a comparison because the MM is at another place at the moment. As I also refuse to compare picture quality from memory after probably 2 years or more between viewings, all I can offer is a few screenshots from the NEW disc.

Maybe someone can do comparison shots?

Mondo Macabro above. Christian's grab below.

I have both discs now and I can say that although the print of the German disc is more scratchy, it is FAR SUPERIOR in quality to the Mondo Macabro one. Much more color, nuance, the film looks stunning. There is one scene though which seems to be taken from a lesser print (where the bound Lise-Lotte character is prepared for her blood-exchange by Wolfgang Preiss). This scene is much darker and murkier.
Also, the liner notes (by Michael Püttmann) states the rumour that the film was completed by Mario Bava, after Ferroni having left the film, although Püttmann says that this rumour is hard to prove definitely.

Seeing Henrik's screengrabs, I disagree. The top photo, which is taken from the Mondo Macabre DVD, has much better colour balance and richness then the bottom, which is taken from the new DVD.
Ah, the Bava rumour continues. Wasn't this disproved a while back?

I corresponded with the film's DP and he confirmed that Mario Bava had nothing to do with the production. I've never heard any story about Ferroni leaving or abandoning the picture.

The top photo may have better color balance, but it sure is missing a helluva lotta detail compared to the bottom photo...

The German disc has more detail, more colours, semi-colours, more lustre.
The MONDO MACABRO disc is darker, murkier.
My guess is that we will see an American ed of this print eventually B)

How do the audio options compare? From memory, the MM disc offers composite foreign language audio with subs, and an English dub track (I could be wrong). Does the German disc match this or is it just simply just German / English? The German disc does have a snazzy cover.
Stefan Knust - March 25, 2008 09:34 PM (GMT)
The version from NEW has the following audio tracks:
- German
- English (US)
- English (GB)
- French
- Italian

While the cover lists two English audio tracks, German and Italian, it also features a French track unadvertised.
EDIT: Stefan already answered while I was checking the disc.

Any subtitles? If not, it's a bummer.
