Title: This month on Showtime
Description: letterboxed

Ira Hozinsky - March 5, 2008 05:37 PM (GMT)
Unlike HBO/Cinemax, Showtime occasionally shows feature films in letterboxed format; but the Showtime website does not indicate this, and my DVR's on-screen program grid sometimes lists flat presentations as letterboxed, and vice versa. So it is after personal observation that I can report that the following titles are being shown letterboxed on various Showtime channels this month:

WISE BLOOD (Huston)
THE NEON BIBLE (Davies)
MONTENEGRO (Makavejev)
CANNONBALL (Bartel)
THE MAN WHO CRIED (Potter)

Bob Cashill - March 5, 2008 07:20 PM (GMT)
And also FUTUREWORD, the entertaining if not quite the same thing sequel to WESTWORLD.

Marty McKee - March 5, 2008 07:23 PM (GMT)
I don't know if any of these are airing this month, but from personal experience, I can tell you that the Showtime channels have aired these at 1.85:

HONKY TONK FREEWAY
EMPLOYEE OF THE MONTH
WAITING
ROLLING THUNDER
MAD DOG BLUES
SWEET REVENGE
BEYOND THE LAW
FROM THE HIP
NATIONAL LAMPOON PRESENTS BARELY LEGAL
NATIONAL LAMPOON PRESENTS DORM DAZE 2 (but not DORM DAZE)
TRUE CONFESSIONS
MY TUTOR
ROLLING VENGEANCE
PRIVATE LESSONS
STONE COLD DEAD

Plus, Showtime allows you to burn these to DVD-R, whereas the hated HBO/Cinemax channels are copy-protected. Boo.

I can still record HBO straight to my DVR, it seems the copy guard is not country wide but only in certain areas. Who pays for that I wonder? I barely watch HBO ( except for THE WIRE which ends next week) and will be dropping it thereafter.

Marty McKee - March 5, 2008 09:42 PM (GMT)
Yes, but can you burn from your DVR to DVD-R? I'd be surprised if you can (though happily surprised).

Dale Sherman - March 5, 2008 10:21 PM (GMT)
BTW, there's a free preview of Showtime March 6-9 for those who have DirecTV. Don't know if that includes their HD channel(s).

Ira Hozinsky - March 5, 2008 10:31 PM (GMT)
I forgot to mention Dahl's THE LAST SEDUCTION (being televised in its OAR for the first time, I believe).

There are a number of other letterboxed films in Showtime's current schedule (BILLY LIAR, WORLD TRADE CENTER) that have popped up there in previous months.

Marty, yes, I can record from the DVR to DVD-R's. I got my recorder in late 2005 and have never encountered anything I could not burn. There must be a device that gets around the protection, btu I have never looked into it ( as I happily don't need it ....yet ).
