Wong Kar Wai's MY BLUEBERRY NIGHTS was trounced at Cannes. But it is making its U.S. debut on April 4, minus 21 of its 111 minutes, according to a press release that just crossed my desk. Now, from what I gather, the cutting might pick up the pace; left unanswered is who made the cuts, the director or distributor The Weinstein Company, whose founders have made a habit of this sort of thing. Anyone have any info? And has anyone seen it?
Wasn't it the director himself? I seem to recall reading in various sources (the first that springs to mind is the latest issue of Sight & Sound) that following its reception in Cannes he went back and re-edited it, which is the version that will (I assume) be getting released everywhere. (Certainly the cinema nearest me here in the UK that is showing it lists it only as 95mins)
Of course, that I suppose doesn't really answer your question, since that leaves us with whether he chose to re-edit or if he was "nudged" in that direction by the powers that be.
