As a Jack Ketchum fan, I'm curious, but the LA Weekly review was pretty negative. Granted, Ketchum's vicious material is not for all tastes, and sometimes, not even my own...
I recall finding it enjoyable and boasting strong performances from a relatively unknown cast, losing its way a little as it wore on, then coming together in an ending that felt rather uncomfortable to watch and met with very mixed reactions from the audience.
I thought it was a little bit different and at least worth a watch. But you're certainly right about it not appealing to everyone and being a little vicious.
Apologies if this is all a bit vague - I saw it at a festival a couple of years ago and had since assumed it had disappeared into obscurity or a token DVD release.
I really liked THE LOST when it played the Auckland Film Festival last year. It has a bit of a Lynchian vibe to it, perhaps the cross between a storybook innocence and dark yet banal evil, with a nice touch for details. It's a little jumbly in some of the middle, but definitely comes together at the end for a decidedly strong (and decidedly disturbing) finale. It also made nice use of the 2.35:1 frame, as I recall.
I'd certainly recommend checking it out.
