Description: car accident

I saw this over at the Kung Fu Cinema forum this morning. I held off posting until I saw some sort of confirmation. He was a moderator for that forum. Here's a link:

This is horrible, horrible news. I'm shocked. I'm stunned.

I always loved reading the interesting insights, knowledge and passion about film that Linn's posts contained in spades, here at mhvf and elsewhere.

He'll definitely be missed.

RIP

This is truly awful. Linn was an incredibly nice guy and, by far, the most knowledgeable person around when it comes to old school martial arts movies. He had been working for years on his book, as well as dedicating a great deal of time and energy helping labels like Media Blasters and BCI with their forthcoming Shaw Brothers titles. I hope that his work can somehow still be published.

RIP Linn.

Brian Camp - February 29, 2008 04:04 PM (GMT)
This is sad, sad news. Not an easy thing to deal with. Damn, he was 20 years younger than me.

He was one of a number of Mobians whose posts I would read no matter what the subject header simply because I knew it would be interesting reading. I was especially happy when he responded to one of my posts here because I knew I'd be learning something new. Just three weeks ago, he gave me some good feedback on Cathay Pictures over in the Shaw Bros. thread.

And he did great liner notes, too (Media Blaster's 7 GRANDMASTERS, anyone?).

I sent an e-mail to Matt Barnwell at macon.com, the writer of the news item that Terry linked to. I included links to this thread and the Kung Fu Cinema thread on Linn, simply to alert the reporter to the larger story behind this tragedy. It wouldn't hurt if others did the same.

Bob Cashill - February 29, 2008 04:05 PM (GMT)
How awful. A font of information, suddenly stilled. Condolences.

Randy Byers - February 29, 2008 05:19 PM (GMT)
I'm really sorry to see this news. My condolences to his friends and family for this loss. I too feel I learned a lot from reading his posts here.

Marty McKee - February 29, 2008 05:34 PM (GMT)
Absolutely awful. I know his loss will be felt by everyone here and many more around the world.

August Ragone - February 29, 2008 07:21 PM (GMT)
Terrible, terrible news. He was a epitome of the best of being a fan and was a very humble expert of old school Kung Fu films. He will be missed.

Ian Friedman - February 29, 2008 07:33 PM (GMT)
I'm just totally shocked, I just can't believe this. I talked to him just two weeks ago about the effort he went through for the Heroes Two Commentary. He was so happy to finish. I'm just so shocked. I really can't express anything else. I am so sad, I'm just heartbroken. He was such a great friend and someone I will never forget. I am at such a loss.

I only hope that his work will be preserved. He had phone books written for his book, we must make sure they are published.

WE MUST! His legacy was not just some liner notes here and there.

Ian Friedman - February 29, 2008 07:54 PM (GMT)
We need to carry his memory on, I was hoping that we can get as many quotes and stories about Linn. I want to publish them in on giant article that anyone can repost where there want to, so we can let the world know just how wonderful Linn was.

Is anyone with me?

Peter Nepstad - February 29, 2008 08:09 PM (GMT)

I had to read the title of this thread several times before I could believe what I was reading. Devestating. Linn's passing is a real loss for all of us.

I can only support the sentiment of John and Ian and others on this thread that his legacy be preserved and published somehow. I would be happy to help such an effort in any way I can.

Cars suck.

This news just made my heart sink. What an incredibly nice guy who shared with only the best of intentions and great tenderness. As others have said Linn's posts were sought out and savored. I never would've guessed he was so young from that great depth of knowledge he'd acquired. My prayers go out to his family and to my fellow grieving Mobians.

Darren Gross - February 29, 2008 08:14 PM (GMT)
I found him a highly knowledgeable, extremely pleasant person. I traded emails with him several times about Asia film history, censorship, and release information that I had trouble tracking down. He was always responsive, and generous with his information, and time, even when my questions strayed a bit out of his direct area of interest.

That he developed this immense wealth of knowledge from Georgia, of all places, is itself, an achievement.

His loss is a damn shame. My deepest condolences to his family and close friends.

Ian Friedman - February 29, 2008 08:59 PM (GMT)
I just talked to John S at MB. Heroes Two is finished, but there is a wealth of Linn's info that will be used in later releases and there very open to a tribute about Linn appearing on the next disc or one in the future. I would ask that if anyone can just tell me about how Linn helped you or the knowledge he displayed to please drop me an email at gfanikf@yahoo.com I'm going to start to assemble and write a tribute to our wonderful and truly missed friend so we can insure his memory and legacy will burn bright forever!

Thank you
Ian

Ian,

Can anyone help build a list in this thread of Linn's published works, audio commentaries, and liner notes?

Ian Friedman - February 29, 2008 10:22 PM (GMT)
QUOTE (Darren Gross @ Feb 29 2008, 04:11 PM)
Ian,

Can anyone help build a list in this thread of Linn's published works, audio commentaries, and liner notes?

I think it would be a contribution of many to make sure there are no gaps.

Off the top of my head. I know he did notes for Secret Rivals, 7 Grandmasters, Master of the Flying G. I'm sure he did many others (and thats not even including his Cave of Kung Fu site).

If people have these items or others and can scan them and email them to me I will make sure to archive them so all can see the writings of Linn Haynes. I only hope someone will be able to do something with his unpublished writings. To let them go to waste or non-use would be horrible.

Oh my god! I am in absolute shock! I truly can't believe this.

I got to know Linn in 2004 and, when I headed down to Atlanta once to visit a friend, he invited me over to his place. We were supposed to record a commentary for a Media Blasters release that got canceled, but he and his wife were kind enough to let me stay with them for an evening. We were up late into the night talking about movies and spent the next day hitting some Asian grocery/video stores. We even hit one store where a lady asked if we were twins (surprisingly we looked quite similar to our amusement).

Linn was so knowledgeable about many different genres. I would sit back and be in awe when he was talking kung fu movies. This is truly a sad, sad day. Rest in Peace.

Domenick Fraumeni - March 1, 2008 02:48 AM (GMT)
Oh my. Absolutely terrible news. Linn Haynes was everything everyone has said.

Yes, a list of his works and posts should definitely be put together.

Wow, I'm still very shocked by this.

William S. Wilson - March 1, 2008 03:51 PM (GMT)
Linn's obituary can be seen here.

I post it because you can sign a guestbook there. Also, the funeral home has a condolences page that they will print out for his wife and family.

This is such terrible news. Like so many others I appreciated Linn's enthusiasm and authority, and the effort he put into sharing his knowledge here and elsewhere. Four years back, when I asked him to contribute to a film festival catalogue, he leapt into writing a terrific article for it with plenty of gusto. I'm sure he approached his other writing and research with the same level of energy. R.I.P.

Tim.

It was a shock -- to say the least -- to get on to the Asian Cinema board and see the thread about Linn Haynes. Although I never had the privilege of meeting him in person, I have had the pleasure for some years now of reading his knowledgable and often enthusiastic as well as generous writings about Asian, especially Hong Kong kung fu, cinema. The Mobius Home Video Forum is all the poorer for his passing. So too, I'd wager, is Hong Kong cinema fandom and the world at large.

Ian Friedman - March 2, 2008 03:40 PM (GMT)
A small note about if you see Linn's name on a active users list: Linn's wife Monica has been using it to gather information about his kung fu work and to see the comments you left for him, so please don't be surprised when you see his name on the active users lists.

God rest his soul in peace and give patience to his family and friends.

Ian Friedman - March 2, 2008 07:09 PM (GMT)
If anyone here has any of his writings (emails, pm's or saved posts) can you get in touch with me at gfanikf@yahoo.com as his wife Monica wants to save them and place them on a website so all can benefit from his knowledge.

Thanks

Ian Friedman - March 2, 2008 08:19 PM (GMT)
Here is a new unpublished interview Linn did with me so I could quote him for a research paper. It talks about Chinese Nationalism and Japan dealing with Jimmy Wang Yu, Kurata, the Shaws, and more :)

I hope you all will enjoy this

Wow---this is some sad news---I was hoping when I saw the title heading that it was just someone goofing off, but unfortunately, that's not the case. I learned a lot myself from Mr. Haynes's posts and me asking questions over the years about kung fu cinema while still a new fan of the genre myself. It was fun posting to someone who, like a lot of other longtime posters on this board has such enthusiasm for the genre and generously shared whatever knowledge he had with us. R.I.P.,Linn.

Nicholas Halo - March 4, 2008 07:55 PM (GMT)
I too send my condolences to his family and friends, and offer my (all too stupidly horribly belated) thanks for his contributions here. His postings proved to be an invaluable guide to me in my first explorations of Hong Kong cinema and, considering how important movies are in my life, that is a great gift.

For the usual lame petty lazy reasons/rationalizations that allow acts of kindness to go unacknowledged, I never took the time to thank Mr. Haynes, and at this point all that is left is my regret.

Add my voice to all those expressing admiration for his passion and for his knowledge, and deepest appreciation for his generosity in sharing them with an invisible stranger like me.

noh kwangwoo - March 5, 2008 03:21 PM (GMT)
My Condolence. I saw this post a couple of days ago. I lost my word and could not post my condolence for a while. May his soul rest in peace.

Keith Allison - March 5, 2008 09:41 PM (GMT)
Terrible news. Way back when, Linn was one of the first HK film fans I got to know online. This is just horrible news.

Yi Lee - March 6, 2008 01:21 AM (GMT)
Wow,

Coming back from an uneventful week-long trip, this all comes as a huge shock. Thoughts and prayers to the Haynes family not to mention everyone else who has been shaken by the sudden loss.

Robert Richardson - March 6, 2008 11:57 PM (GMT)
I've been away since Friday and sans Internet....this is horrible news to return to. My deepest condolences to Linn's family, friends, and loved ones.

Yves Gendron - March 7, 2008 02:54 PM (GMT)
What a tragic news.

Linn was a huge help for me back in the early 2000 with his infos and encouragments for my own would-be scholarly writing on k-f cinema. Unfortunately we drifted apart when I switched for the French based H-K movie site: HK Cinemagic. His passing now make me sorely regret that we could not kept more in touch.

Goodbye Linn buddy, you are miss.

Yves Gendron.

As has been noted, Linn provided audio commentary for the new DVD edition of the Shaw Bros. classic, HEROES TWO, coming from Media Blasters/Tokyo Shock. Amazon.com announces a release date of April 8, a month from now. Other sources say April 20. In any event, I will buy a copy when it comes out and I urge others to do the same. Here's a link to Amazon's page for it:

Ian Friedman - March 18, 2008 04:39 PM (GMT)
Some further info and specs.

There is a note why Linn's name is not on the case, BUT he IS on the DVD.

Richard Harland Smith - March 21, 2008 03:46 PM (GMT)
I never had any interaction with Linn but I certainly knew his name... and I guess that's as good an epitaph as most of us know-it-alls can hope for. It's always tough with a member of the Mobius family passes, especially when you run into their posts in the years afterwards. I wish there could be some kind of Hall of Remembrance for the fallen.
